ChatGPT is not the end of written integrity - The Georgetown Voice

#artificialintelligence

When the first capable version of ChatGPT was released in November 2022, professors across the internet bemoaned the death of the undergraduate essay as a method to assess students. The Atlantic called the moment a "textpocalypse" and a writer from The New York Times said he was "deeply unsettled" following a conversation with Bing's integrated AI chatbot. ChatGPT, unlike earlier chatbots, has the capacity to generate coherent, long-form writing. ChatGPT has upended what it means to write. But, upon further analysis, it may not be the game-changer for writing or other industries that the world initially envisioned.

Parsing the Results of a Chaotic New York Primary

The New Yorker

Four years ago, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's shock victory in a low-turnout midterm primary election in New York changed the shape of American politics. On Tuesday, the state held low-turnout midterm primaries with no such results. Instead, what the most-watched races offered was the latest glimpse of the ongoing fight between progressive insurgents and Democratic Party loyalists in New York. Loyalists claimed the day's biggest victories, thanks in large part to the state's new political maps--a consequence of a 2020 redistricting process that some of those same Party loyalists, led by then Governor Andrew Cuomo, botched so badly that a state judge ultimately outsourced the job to a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon. The race that got the most attention, and which had the closest outcome, was for an open seat in the newly redrawn Tenth Congressional District, where the attorney Dan Goldman--who served as the House Democrats' lawyer during Donald Trump's first impeachment--squeaked out a victory in a crowded field.

How Nuro became the robotic face of Domino's – TechCrunch

Pandemic pizza was definitely a thing. U.S. consumers forked out a record-breaking $14 billion to have pizza delivered to their doors in 2020, and nearly half of that total was spent with just one brand: Domino's. "Domino's is the home of pizza delivery," said Dennis Maloney, Domino's chief innovation officer. "Delivery is at the core of who we are, so it's very important for us to lead when it comes to the consumer experience of delivery." The R2X (now known as R2) deftly avoids potholes, falling trees and traffic jams caused by The Noid -- a character created by Domino's in the 1980s to symbolize the difficulties of delivering a pizza in 30 minutes or less.

Defiant DeJoy says he won't restore mail-sorting machines

Boston Herald

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Postmaster General Louis DeJoy refused requests by Democrats on Monday to restore mail-sorting machines or mailboxes removed from service as part of sweeping operational changes at the Postal Service, despite complaints that the changes are causing lasting damage and widespread delays. Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., told DeJoy at a hearing on Capitol Hill that changes imposed by DeJoy this summer have threatened the reliability of mail service in his state and across the country. "What the heck are you doing?" Lynch asked DeJoy at a sometimes contentious House Oversight Committee hearing. Either through "gross incompetence" or "on purpose," DeJoy is "deliberately dismantling this once-proud institution," Lynch said. DeJoy denied any wrongdoing and accused Lynch and other Democrats of spreading misinformation.

U.S. accuses Iran in drone attack on Saudi Aramco plants

The Japan Times

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday accused Iran of leading attacks on Saudi oil plants that cut the kingdom's output roughly in half, ruling out Yemeni involvement and denouncing Tehran for false diplomacy. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed credit for Saturday's attacks on two plants at the heart of Saudi Arabia's oil industry, including the world's biggest petroleum processing facility. Pompeo, however, said on Twitter that there was no evidence the attacks came from Yemen. "Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia while Rouhani and Zarif pretend to engage in diplomacy," Pompeo said, referring to Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif. "Amid all the calls for de-escalation, Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply," he added.

Can Artificial Intelligence Fix a Major Food Delivery Pain Point?

#artificialintelligence

Anyone who regularly calls for takeout has likely had an order screwed up due to human error. You want two large pizzas, extra pepperoni, light cheese, and instead, your pies arrive light on the pepperoni and heavy on the mozzarella. These situations can be frustrating, not least because of the time involved. If you decide to reject the order, you have to call the company back, then wait for the correct (hopefully) meal to show up. That's the sort of hassle that sometimes leads to people picking the unwanted pickles off their burgers, or deciding that they can live with the General Tso when we wanted the Kung Pao.

How GrubHub Analyzed 4,000 Dishes to Predict Your Next Order

WIRED

All Matt Maloney wanted to know was whether Chicago-style deep dish pizza is better than New York-style thin crust. If he were anyone else, Maloney would have had to get violently anecdotal. Deep dish, while delicious, is obviously not so much a pizza as a casserole; conversely, if you want to put pizza toppings on a cracker, why not just order a flatbread? Maloney felt like he should be able to literally answer the question. "Given the volume of transactions I do on a daily basis," Maloney says, "I should be able to tell you, objectively, which is better." Because broadly, Maloney is of course right.

How Domino's is using tech to woo Millennials and beat rival Pizza Hut

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Ford has partnered with Pizza maker Domino's to test delivery by self driving cars. Jose Sepulveda (@josesepulvedatv) has more. Domino's is set to test driverless car deliveries tests in Florida's Miami-Dade County. Domino's Pizza spent a good part of the last decade chasing what seemed like every digital doodad to deliver pizza -- sometimes to the scorn of observers who pointed out that the business was, after all, popping topping-covered dough in an oven and delivering it. Why, the skeptics asked, do you need a digital voice-recognition app on your phone to order a pizza, when you can just call and speak to an actual person?

Apple is using machine learning for Face ID. Is that a good thing?

#artificialintelligence

The future of all biometrics will involve artificial intelligence. That statement might seem strange. After all, biometrics is a security issue, one that often involves complex algorithms, randomly generated passcodes, and multiple authentication steps. But in the future, data security will rely on AI and machine learning to analyze data and determine whether someone is trying to gain access illegally. Case in point: Apple's new Face ID technology, which will debut on the iPhone X.
