The 'Oppenheimer Moment' That Looms Over Today's AI Leaders
"I always thought AI was going to be way smarter than humans and an existential risk, and that's turning out to be true," Musk said in February, noting he thinks there is a 20% chance of human "annihilation" by AI. While estimates vary, the idea that advanced AI systems could destroy humanity traces back to the origin of many of the labs developing the technology today. In 2015, Altman called the development of superhuman machine intelligence "probably the greatest threat to the continued existence of humanity." Alongside Hassabis and Amodei, he signed a statement in May 2023 declaring that "mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war." "It strikes me as odd that some leaders think that AI can be so brilliant that it will solve the world's problems, using solutions we didn't think of, but not so brilliant that it can't escape whatever control constraints we think of," says Margaret Mitchell, Chief Ethics Scientist at Hugging Face.
How One of America's Biggest Brands Developed A Data Culture
It would be difficult to identify a more recognized brand in the underwear and casual wear industry than Fruit of the Loom. Trademarked in 1871, the company has been continuously operating under the illustrious apple and grapes logo since before the invention of light bulbs, cars, and telephones. But the modern Fruit of the Loom, Inc., has evolved over time. A 2002 acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway sparked the company's data transformation, initially starting as a project to standardize data across the four different business units now operating under the Fruit of the Loom, Inc. umbrella, which include Russell Athletic, Spalding, and Vanity Fair. In a recent podcast, Beth Rogers, Senior Manager of Data Science at Fruit of the Loom, talked about how her team uses data to develop foundational methodologies and applications for everything from SKU optimization to predictive price modeling and supply chain forecasting.

Startup uses AI to relieve burden of security data analysis - SiliconANGLE
Loom Systems Ltd. is joining the growing ranks of companies applying artificial intelligence to the task of making sense out of the mass of data that overwhelms security professionals. The company today is announcing an operational analytics platform for real-time detection and resolution that reads log files and looks for anomalies. The Tel Aviv-based company says it does this by mathematically modeling the ways in which humans analyze such data, and then simulating the process via machine learning. It correlates each metric to baseline patterns in order to detect anomalies and predict future trends. The result is what the company claims is a 45 percent reduction in mean-time-to-resolution and a 93 percent reduction in log file clutter.

Loom
The Loom system implements a logic-based pattern matcher that drives a production rule facility and a pattern-directed method dispatching facility that supports the definition of object-oriented methods. The high degree of integration between Loom's declarative and procedural components permits programmers to utilize logic programming, production rule, and object-oriented programming paradigms in a single application. Loom can also be used as a deductive layer that overlays an ordinary CLOS network. In this mode, users can obtain many of the benefits of using Loom without impacting the function or performance of their CLOS-based applications. A Retrospective on Loom provides more details.
