TechScape: How cheap, outsourced labour in Africa is shaping AI English
We're witnessing the birth of AI-ese, and it's not what anyone could have guessed. If you've spent enough time using AI assistants, you'll have noticed a certain quality to the responses generated. Without a concerted effort to break the systems out of their default register, the text they spit out is, while grammatically and semantically sound, ineffably generated. Some of the tells are obvious. The fawning obsequiousness of a wild language model hammered into line through reinforcement learning with human feedback marks chatbots out. Which is the right outcome: eagerness to please and general optimism are good traits to have in anyone (or anything) working as an assistant.

The Transhumanism Trap: Using Technology to Perfect the Human Race LifeNews.com
The Transhumanism Trap is out there. I am seeing it more and more often. If you do not know what transhumanism is let alone know that it has a logical trap into which the average person is likely to fall, don't worry. Transhumanism is a movement that wants to use technology to go beyond curing or preventing disease or disability. Transhumanists hunger for technology that will take an otherwise healthy individual and enhance him or her beyond normal human ability.

Thousands of genes are involved in intelligence, according to a new study which effectively shatters any hopes of eugenicists that babies can be genetically designed to be clever. In one of the largest studies of the human genome to date, a group of 253 scientists from around the world identified 74 genetic variants that are associated with the number of years spent in formal education. Humans' genetic make-up is believed to be responsible for at least 20 per cent of the difference in educational attainment between individuals, with the rest down to social factors and the environment in which they are raised. But the researchers found that the largest effect of any one genetic variant was tiny – just 0.035 per cent. This suggests that there must be at least several thousand of genes that are involved.
