How forensics identified forgotten teen left buried in a carpet for eight years
Karen Price was just 15 when she vanished in 1981 and, had it not been for a chance discovery by two builders, her body might never have been found. Because no-one was looking for her. Dubbed Little Miss Nobody, Karen had not been seen for eight years when her skeletal remains, wrapped in a carpet, were uncovered by two unsuspecting builders in Cardiff city centre on 7 December 1989. Her body, found in a shallow grave outside a basement flat on Fitzhamon Embankment, was so badly decomposed it was impossible to establish the cause of her death. Now, more than 40 years on and after the release of her killer, a new documentary has examined how police put together the jigsaw to solve the killing of a teenager known to no-one and how it involved groundbreaking methods to bring two men to justice.

Meteorologists said that this tropical rainstorm is expected to form quickly over the weekend, potentially bringing'prolonged coastal flooding' to the entire East Coast, from southern Florida to New England. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has noted that the next two Atlantic storm names will be Jerry and Karen, with Jerry likely to form farther away from the US this week. A Machine With Human-Like Memory Systems
Kim, Taewoon, Cochez, Michael, Francois-Lavet, Vincent, Neerincx, Mark, Vossen, Piek
Inspired by the cognitive science theory, we explicitly model an agent with both semantic and episodic memory systems, and show that it is better than having just one of the two memory systems. In order to show this, we have designed and released our own challenging environment, "the Room", compatible with OpenAI Gym, where an agent has to properly learn how to encode, store, and retrieve memories to maximize its rewards. The Room environment allows for a hybrid intelligence setup where machines and humans can collaborate. We show that two agents collaborating with each other results in better performance than one agent acting alone.

Could a Robot Be a Friend?
When COVID-19 first hit, I was terrified to leave my home. As the father of three and a husband of 25 years, I felt helpless to protect my family as the narrative changed seemingly day-to-day. I knew fashioning medical masks from scarves was far from ideal, so I made masks for my family, friends, and any elderly customer that wanted one, using my 3D printer and some micron-level cloth filter material intended for residential HVAC systems. Still, I felt like I had no control over what was happening. The CDC reported in 2020 that between June 24 and 30, close to 40% of adults in the U.S. reported at least one adverse mental health concern--including anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicidal ideation, among others. UK-based researchers introduced the term "COVID-19 anxiety syndrome" in Psychiatry Research, noting avoidance, worrying, daily symptom checking, and threat monitoring as key traits.
