It has been described as Germany's most spectacular bank heist in years. On a quiet weekend just after Christmas, a group of thieves broke into a High Street bank in the western town of Gelsenkirchen, by boring through a wall with an industrial drill. They looted more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes and made off with millions of euros. Over a month later, police have yet to make an arrest. For the bank's clients, some of whom say they have lost their life savings and precious family jewellery and valuables, this is a time of anger, confusion and shock.

So we were briefly intrigued to learn about something called "smart jewellery". Basically, imagine wearable technology like a Fitbit or Apple Watch that can monitor your heart rate and so forth, but instead of looking like a bit of tech, it is integrated into luxury jewellery. A recent South China Morning Post headline explains that "Gucci, Hermès, Tag Heuer, Vertu and other brands are combining Silicon Valley's wearable tech with exquisite European craftsmanship".


Machine Learning to Estimate Gross Loss of Jewelry for Wax Patterns

In mass manufacturing of jewellery, the gross loss is estimated before manufacturing to calculate the wax weight of the pattern that would be investment casted to make multiple identical pieces of jewellery. Machine learning is a technology that is a part of AI which helps create a model with decision-making capabilities based on a large set of user-defined data. In this paper, the authors found a way to use Machine Learning in the jewellery industry to estimate this crucial Gross Loss. Choosing a small data set of manufactured rings and via regression analysis, it was found out that there is a potential of reducing the error in estimation from +-2-3 to +-0.5 using ML Algorithms from historic data and attributes collected from the CAD file during the design phase itself. To evaluate the approach's viability, additional study must be undertaken with a larger data set.

Ewa Nowak's anti-AI mask protects wearers from mass surveillance

Polish designer Ewa Nowak has developed a mask that makes the wearer's face undetectable to facial recognition algorithms used in public surveillance cameras. Nowak designed the Incognito mask in an attempt to reclaim the privacy and anonymity that they feel has been lost to face-detecting cameras installed in public spaces. Described by the designer as "face jewellery", the main structure of the mask-like accessory consists of a long piece of brass that has been shaped to fit the contours of the face, curving behind the ears like a pair of glasses. It features three prominent elements that work together to make the wearer's face "unrecognisable" to cameras. These are two brass circles that sit below the wearer's eyes, and a rectangular element positioned between the eyes.

This time next week, on Tuesday 11 October at Bletchley Park, sees the launch of an initiative to celebrate women in maths and computing. As a new branch of the existing Suffrage Science scheme, it will encourage women into science, and to reach senior leadership roles. Women make up no more than four in ten undergraduates studying maths (London Mathematical Society), and fewer than two in ten of those studying computer science (WISE report, 2014). Despite much effort, there has been little sign of improvement. In fact, the number of women studying computer science at the undergraduate level has been in decline since the 1980s.
