OBR head's resignation leaves potential landmines for Reeves

BBC News

The shock resignation came for a very specific reason, but the OBR saga will continue with a series of decisions the chancellor will have to make over Richard Hughes' replacement. Firstly the Chancellor will have to find a respected and credible economist to run the OBR. There are several candidates, who might fit the mould of fiercely independent bean counters. The list will be carefully watched by the markets for any departure from the normal model. The problem is that there is some political pressure to do just that.

A Chaotic History of Clickolding, the Year's Most Disturbing Game

WIRED

The man in the mask wants you to click the tally counter. So begins Strange Scaffold's short, yet highly distressing new game, Clickolding--a very literal take on clicker games--released on Steam this week. The lore of how video games pitches are conceived is not always exciting. It's often an obfuscated process that involves pitch decks, investor hunts, and a lot of jumping through approval hoops. Clickolding was not one such case.

The Fake Fake-News Problem and the Truth About Misinformation

The New Yorker

Millions of people have watched Mike Hughes die. It happened on February 22, 2020, not far from Highway 247 near the Mojave Desert city of Barstow, California. A homemade rocket ship with Hughes strapped in it took off from a launching pad mounted on a truck. A trail of steam billowed behind the rocket as it swerved and then shot upward, a detached parachute unfurling ominously in its wake. In a video recorded by the journalist Justin Chapman, Hughes disappears into the sky, a dark pinpoint in a vast, uncaring blueness.

What Do We Really Know About Teaching Kids Math?

The New Yorker

Earlier this week, I wrote about the history of progressive math education, the culture wars it has inspired over the past hundred years, and the controversy over the California Math Framework. Today, I want to start with a much broader question: What do we really know about how to teach math to children? The answer is not all that much--and what little we do know is highly contested. An American math education usually proceeds in a linear fashion, with the idea that one subject prepares you for the next. Take, for example, the typical path through mathematics for a relatively advanced student.

LeadingAge 2022: Best Practices for Digital Transformation in Senior Care

#artificialintelligence

Older adults are adopting technologies such as smartphones, smart TVs, Internet of Medical Things devices, tablets and interactive voice solutions. Glen Tibbitts, corporate director of IT at United Church Homes, said the level of technology adoption and literacy among residents is wide ranging. The organization is currently testing the use of Amazon's Echo Show devices. Michael Hughes, senior executive vice president and chief transformation and innovation officer at United Church Homes, explained that training is being done in parts. "It's important to tie the technology to a meaningful outcome and then work with properties to iterate on that and create a virtuous circle," he said.

Will 'connected cars' persuade drivers to pay for a high-spec ride?

The Guardian

When a customer said they had driven across three US states, from Texas to North Carolina, to get their car fixed, Tesla servicer Jason Hughes knew something must be up. It turned out to be an unusual problem: the Model S had lost a third of its battery range in an instant, while it was parked on a driveway. One of the US electric carmaker's big selling points is that it is constantly connected to its vehicles via mobile networks, offering software updates and entertainment downloads "over the air", or OTA. That remote connection could be revolutionary for the industry, opening the door for self-driving features to be downloaded and TV shows to be livestreamed in high definition. But the connected car is having teething problems.

Game (voice)over: actors turn to video game work during pandemic

The Guardian

It was not only audiences that turned to video games during the pandemic. With theatres closed, and TV and film production on hiatus, British actors chose work they could do from isolation – and the booming gaming industry was ready to fill the gap. "The minute the pandemic hit, it was just everyone asking me: 'What mic should I get? How do you set up a home studio?'" says Cassie Layton, an actor and musician from south-west London. "I was lucky in that I had worked doing voice acting for a few years before the pandemic hit. But every single actor, I think, either had the thought or took the action to set up a home studio."
