From Virtual Agents to Robot Teams: A Multi-Robot Framework Evaluation in High-Stakes Healthcare Context

Advancements in generative models have enabled multi-agent systems (MAS) to perform complex virtual tasks such as writing and code generation, which do not generalize well to physical multi-agent robotic teams. Current frameworks often treat agents as conceptual task executors rather than physically embodied entities, and overlook critical real-world constraints such as spatial context, robotic capabilities (e.g., sensing and navigation). To probe this gap, we reconfigure and stress-test a hierarchical multi-agent robotic team built on the CrewAI framework in a simulated emergency department onboarding scenario. We identify five persistent failure modes: role misalignment; tool access violations; lack of in-time handling of failure reports; noncompliance with prescribed workflows; bypassing or false reporting of task completion. Based on this analysis, we propose three design guidelines emphasizing process transparency, proactive failure recovery, and contextual grounding. Our work informs the development of more resilient and robust multi-agent robotic systems (MARS), including opportunities to extend virtual multi-agent frameworks to the real world.


Co-Designing Augmented Reality Tools for High-Stakes Clinical Teamwork

How might healthcare workers (HCWs) leverage augmented reality head-mounted displays (AR-HMDs) to enhance teamwork? Although AR-HMDs have shown immense promise in supporting teamwork in healthcare settings, design for Emergency Department (ER) teams has received little attention. The ER presents unique challenges, including procedural recall, medical errors, and communication gaps. To address this gap, we engaged in a participatory design study with healthcare workers to gain a deep understanding of the potential for AR-HMDs to facilitate teamwork during ER procedures. Our results reveal that AR-HMDs can be used as an information-sharing and information-retrieval system to bridge knowledge gaps, and concerns about integrating AR-HMDs in ER workflows. We contribute design recommendations for seven role-based AR-HMD application scenarios involving HCWs with various expertise, working across multiple medical tasks. We hope our research inspires designers to embark on the development of new AR-HMD applications for high-stakes, team environments.


Hypercubewise Preference Aggregation in Multi-Issue Domains

We consider a framework for preference aggregation on multiple binary issues, where agents' preferences are represented by (possibly cyclic) CP-nets. We focus on the majority aggregation of the individual CP-nets, which is the CP-net where the direction of each edge of the hypercube is decided according to the majority rule. First we focus on hypercube Condorcet winners (HCWs); in particular, we show that, assuming a uniform distribution for the CP-nets, the probability that there exists at least one HCW is at least 1-1/e, and the expected number of HCWs is 1. Our experimental results confirm these results. We also show experimental results under the Impartial Culture assumption. We then generalize a few tournament solutions to select winners from (weighted) majoritarian CP-nets, namely Copeland, maximin, and Kemeny. For each of these, we address some social choice theoretic and computational issues.
