Seagull survives swallowing a giant fish hook–thanks to local vets
'This gull got very lucky!' The young lesser black backed gull was found in Cape Cod with a bobber hanging out of its mouth. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. A young seagull found in Cape Cod bit off a bit more than he could chew. The veterinary team at the New England Wildlife Center recently removed a large fishing hook from the bird's GI tract.

Gull: A Generative Multifunctional Audio Codec
Luo, Yi, Yu, Jianwei, Chen, Hangting, Gu, Rongzhi, Weng, Chao
We introduce Gull, a generative multifunctional audio codec. Gull is a general purpose neural audio compression and decompression model which can be applied to a wide range of tasks and applications such as real-time communication, audio super-resolution, and codec language models. The key components of Gull include (1) universal-sample-rate modeling via subband modeling schemes motivated by recent progress in audio source separation, (2) gain-shape representations motivated by traditional audio codecs, (3) improved residual vector quantization modules, (4) elastic decoder network that enables user-defined model size and complexity during inference time, (5) built-in ability for audio super-resolution without the increase of bitrate. We compare Gull with existing traditional and neural audio codecs and show that Gull is able to achieve on par or better performance across various sample rates, bitrates and model complexities in both subjective and objective evaluation metrics.

PREVIEW: Torquay United will use 'artificial intelligence' to tackle Sutton test
Artificial intelligence will be key when Torquay United take on Sutton United on their'plastic pitch' in south London tomorrow afternoon. Sutton's pitch is a quick one and will be good for some fast-flowing, on-the-floor football, and that should suit Torquay down to the ground as they try to add a third consecutive win following the three-week enforced break that left them champing at the bit. Home wins against FC Halifax Town (1-0) and Chorley (2-0) have given Torquay's stated push for the Vanarama National League play-offs some credence – but the Gulls now face two tough away games against Sutton, and then Boreham Wood next weekend, and further wins on the road should really put them within touching distance of the top seven. But Johnson knows it wouldn't take much for United to fall by the wayside, and he will remain wary of Sutton, a team who have had mixed fortunes this season. The manager said: "We obviously need to win games – we can't afford to lose them. So we are having to adjust slightly and at the moment the boys are adjusting and doing it very well. "We are pleased with the clean sheets [four in the last six games] and we are pleased that we have won the last couple of games, and our record in the last six to eight games has been decent as far as points are concerned.
