DARPA's Three Waves of AI Research -- A Special Issue of AI Magazine

Interactive AI Magazine

A fundamental goal of artificial intelligence research and development is the creation of machines that demonstrate what humans consider to be intelligent behavior. Effective knowledge representation and reasoning (KR&R) methods are a foundational requirement for intelligent machines. The development of these methods remains a rich and active area of artificial intelligence research in which advances have been motivated by many factors, including interest in new challenge problems, interest in more complex domains, shortcomings of current methods, improved computational support, increases in requirements to interact effectively with humans, and ongoing funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and other agencies. The article by Richard Fikes and Tom Garvey, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning – A History of DARPA Leadership, highlights several decades of advances in KR&R, paying particular attention to research on planning and on the impact of DARPA's support. Fikes and Garvey are joined by David Israel, a principal scientist in the Artificial Intelligence Center at SRI International, who provides his own brief commentary on KR&R.

"Garry Kasparov lost a match to the computer program program deep blue. It was a pivotal moment in machine intelligence for some it was an existential crisis a challenge to the supremacy of human intellect but for the technologists of the world this was a milestone of another kind a leap forward in the arena of artificial intelligence a sign that their dream of truly intelligent machine might not be so crazy after all a machine that can think remains the Dream News and quite a few startling breakthroughs away. Panelists to discuss artificial intelligence in Saratoga

#artificialintelligence

A panel discussion on artificial intelligence will highlight a luncheon scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24 at Saratoga Springs City Center. "The AI Opportunity: Developing an AI Ecosystem in Upstate New York" will tell why artificial intelligence matters, and what opportunities exist locally and regionally. Panelists will share ideas, experiences, and viewpoints about AI technology, research and development, ethics, and policies. There will be time to network with local leaders, industry experts, and community stakeholders following a discussion and question-and-answer session. This event is the first in a series of economic development "Lunch and Learns."

Philly Twitter is negative, but not most negative, according to Data Jawn - Technical.ly Philly

The reboot of Data Jawn, the Philly-centric data science event that took place Wednesday at the Science History Insitute, came peppered with deep thoughts, good memes and hard data. Out of over a dozen speakers, perhaps the most striking was Magento's Ben Garvey, who analyzed 1.5 million geo-tagged tweets in answer the long-running question: Is the "negadelphia" myth true? Garvey captured over 100,000 tweets from each of the 13 biggest cities in the country and ran them through a speech sentiment analysis tool. "Philly is one of the least positive-tweeting cities in America," Garvey said, signaling our city's score of 0.72. Los Angeles tops the list as least negative city with a score of 0.99.

The burgeoning business of helping people save

#artificialintelligence

I know this because I signed up for a new app called Wela that uses account aggregation and artificial intelligence to analyze money coming in and going out of my accounts. It lets me know when my daily spending is out of line, and it tells me how I'm doing relative to my stated financial goals. Wela launched earlier this month, making it one of the newer firms in the busy business of helping people save. Also, another fairly new entrant is Self Lender, which gives people a way to improve their credit score, by taking out a small loan and paying it back to themselves. While each firm in the space has its own particular bent, my sense is that all of these options can be useful --and make for successful businesses --if the user truly takes the given advice to heart.

Will Client AI Redefine the Design Industry? Webdesigner Depot

#artificialintelligence

The artificial intelligence (AI) industry is undergoing unprecedented growth. AI development is finding its way into all areas of business and, increasingly, into creative endeavors. Despite the obvious difficulties, Canva, The Grid, and Autodesk have all tried to market AI design algorithms, with varying degrees of failure. Adobe is understood to be working on AI enhancements to its Creative Cloud product range. Eventually, someone will arrive at a mathematical formula that approximates the creative process.
