The concept of "smart cities" is no longer confined to the realms of futuristic science fiction--they're quickly becoming part of our everyday reality. Technologies like self-driving buses that communicate with traffic lights and AI-monitored CCTV cameras are being implemented in cities from Singapore to Las Vegas, and the technology behind these smart-city initiatives promises innovative solutions for both municipalities and their citizens--offering safer and more efficient living for an ever-growing population. The smart-city promise is often delivered without the fine print though: namely, that a single attack waged against just one component of a connected infrastructure could disable an entire smart city in a matter of minutes. Ask average citizens about their biggest frustrations in dealing with government organizations and you're likely to conjure up at least a few stories of never-ending lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Bureaucracy and manual processes have, fairly or not, become synonymous with the business of government. They upset constituents, and chances are they don't help government workers get their jobs done, either.

While most AI tech coming out right now will be very specific to the department, there will certainly be more aggregated platform plays in the future. Adopting AI onto one of your existing platforms (that covers three to four departments) and works by one set of internal rules will be much easier than trying to layer AI onto individual departmental platforms that are siloed throughout the org and all have different sets of rules. Think about it from a language perspective -- getting four countries with different languages to unite will be much more difficult than four countries with the same language.
