RPC: A Modular Framework for Robot Planning, Control, and Deployment

This paper presents an open-source, lightweight, yet comprehensive software framework, named RPC, which integrates physics-based simulators, planning and control libraries, debugging tools, and a user-friendly operator interface. RPC enables users to thoroughly evaluate and develop control algorithms for robotic systems. While existing software frameworks provide some of these capabilities, integrating them into a cohesive system can be challenging and cumbersome. To overcome this challenge, we have modularized each component in RPC to ensure easy and seamless integration or replacement with new modules. Additionally, our framework currently supports a variety of model-based planning and control algorithms for robotic manipulators and legged robots, alongside essential debugging tools, making it easier for users to design and execute complex robotics tasks. 150 African Workers for ChatGPT, TikTok and Facebook Vote to Unionize at Landmark Nairobi Meeting

More than 150 workers whose labor underpins the AI systems of Facebook, TikTok and ChatGPT gathered in Nairobi on Monday and pledged to establish the first African Content Moderators Union, in a move that could have significant consequences for the businesses of some of the world's biggest tech companies. The current and former workers, all employed by third party outsourcing companies, have provided content moderation services for AI tools used by Meta, Bytedance, and OpenAI--the respective owners of Facebook, TikTok and the breakout AI chatbot ChatGPT. Despite the mental toll of the work, which has left many content moderators suffering from PTSD, their jobs are some of the lowest-paid in the global tech industry, with some workers earning as little as $1.50 per hour. As news of the successful vote to register the union was read out, the packed room of workers at the Mรถvenpick Hotel in Nairobi burst into cheers and applause, a video from the event seen by TIME shows. Confetti fell onto the stage, and jubilant music began to play as the crowd continued to cheer.

I don't love devoting the first several paragraphs of this newsletter to Amazon every week, but no one is making waves -- both good and bad -- in the robotics space quite like the little mom-and-pop bookseller from Seattle, Washington. This is one of the bad weeks. It's a story about what happens when your high-profile pilot doesn't turn out as planned. Failure is always an option. It's not a good option, and it's certainly not the option anyone is hoping for, but to suggest it's not an option is really just a fundamental misunderstanding of what the word "option" means.

Self-driving cars have the potential to change the paradigm of transportation. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, 93% of all vehicle accidents are influenced by human error. Eliminating those accidents would be a giant leap forward, a safer means of transportation. However, developing autonomous driving systems requires a tremendous amount of training images, usually collected and labelled by human labor, which is costly and error-prone. To make things worse, gathering such a vast amount of real driving images is challenging because we cannot artificially make unusual corner cases or peculiar weather and lighting conditions.

Between 2015 and 2020 people applying for visas to enter the United Kingdom to work, study or visit loved ones would fill in the paperwork in the usual way, and that data would then be handed over to an algorithm to assess. It would give them a rating: red, amber or green. Of those being assessed as green 96.3 per cent were waved through. Those marked as red โ€“ the'riskiest' category โ€“ weren't automatically rejected, but were subject to further checks, with senior staff being brought in to check the data and make a final decision. This partially automated process, run by the Home Office, ultimately approved 48 per cent of red applications. Those using it trusted its decisions.


AI system for granting UK visas is biased, rights groups claim

Immigrant rights campaigners have begun a ground-breaking legal case to establish how a Home Office algorithm that filters UK visa applications actually works. The challenge is the first court bid to expose how an artificial intelligence program affects immigration policy decisions over who is allowed to enter the country. Foxglove, a new advocacy group promoting justice in the new technology sector, is supporting the case brought by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) to legally force the Home Office to explain on what basis the algorithm "streams" visa applicants. The two groups both said they feared the AI "streaming tool" created three channels for applicants including a "fast lane" that would lead to "speedy boarding for white people". The Home Office has insisted that the algorithm is used only to allocate applications and does not ultimately rule on them.


Scorpion Venom: Robots Take Human Job Of Milking Arachnids For Medicine

Robots could take over the human job of milking a scorpion for its venom, potentially making the task a lot safer for everyone involved. The Society for Experimental Biology described the robot as clamping onto a scorpion's tail and using electrical stimulation to get it to release venom that can be safely collected. The robot is also portable and lightweight, and can be operated by a single person. According to SEB, which recently held its annual main meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, the technology can have different settings for different species of scorpion and can be programmed to remember them. "The extraction of scorpion venom is a very difficult task and usually takes at least two experimenters," robot designer Mouad Mkamel said in the society's statement.
