Mapping the Neuro-Symbolic AI Landscape by Architectures: A Handbook on Augmenting Deep Learning Through Symbolic Reasoning

Integrating symbolic techniques with statistical ones is a long-standing problem in artificial intelligence. The motivation is that the strengths of either area match the weaknesses of the other, and $\unicode{x2013}$ by combining the two $\unicode{x2013}$ the weaknesses of either method can be limited. Neuro-symbolic AI focuses on this integration where the statistical methods are in particular neural networks. In recent years, there has been significant progress in this research field, where neuro-symbolic systems outperformed logical or neural models alone. Yet, neuro-symbolic AI is, comparatively speaking, still in its infancy and has not been widely adopted by machine learning practitioners. In this survey, we present the first mapping of neuro-symbolic techniques into families of frameworks based on their architectures, with several benefits: Firstly, it allows us to link different strengths of frameworks to their respective architectures. Secondly, it allows us to illustrate how engineers can augment their neural networks while treating the symbolic methods as black-boxes. Thirdly, it allows us to map most of the field so that future researchers can identify closely related frameworks.

Currently, three prototypes of the Ghost Bat have been built and flight-tested in Australia for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) with at least one of those delivered to United States for its own tests and integration trials.

A growing number of countries are following China's lead in deploying artificial intelligence to track citizens, according to a research group's report published Tuesday. And US tech companies IBM as well as Cisco are among firms whose technology is used most. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace report says at least 75 countries are actively using AI tools such as facial recognition for surveillance. IBM and Cisco are among the technology firms whose technology is used most, according to the report. The index of countries where some form of AI surveillance is used includes liberal democracies such as the United States and France as well as more autocratic regimes.


China's Xinjiang surveillance is the dystopian future nobody wants

In July 2009, deadly riots broke out in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, China. Nearly 200 people died, the majority ethnic Han Chinese, and thousands of Chinese troops were brought in to quell the riots. An information battle soon followed, as mobile phone and internet service was cut off in the entire province. For the next 10 months, web access would be almost non-existent in Xinjiang, a vast region larger than Texas with a population of over 20 million. It was one of the most widespread, longest internet shutdowns ever.

Much as Linux, Windows, and iOS coordinate the execution of computing applications, laws coordinate the execution of human society. When new kinds of interactions emerge – sharing our airspace with private drones, for example, or algorithmic trading on financial markets – new laws are encoded to regulate those activities. Laws respond to conflicts of interest, keep criminals and cheats in check, and temper the abuse of power. "Space law, tax law, online law, regulations for autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence... if you think about laws and how they evolve to match the complexity of the functions they coordinate, laws become an interesting problem for complex systems science," says SFI President David Krakauer. During SFI's 2016 Applied Complexity Network (ACtioN) and Board of Trustees Symposium April 3-5, themed "Law OS," Krakauer announced the beginning of a new research program at SFI on "Complexity and the Law."
