Power of Boundary and Reflection: Semantic Transparent Object Segmentation using Pyramid Vision Transformer with Transparent Cues

Glass is a prevalent material among solid objects in everyday life, yet segmentation methods struggle to distinguish it from opaque materials due to its transparency and reflection. While it is known that human perception relies on boundary and reflective-object features to distinguish glass objects, the existing literature has not yet sufficiently captured both properties when handling transparent objects. Hence, we propose incorporating both of these powerful visual cues via the Boundary Feature Enhancement and Reflection Feature Enhancement modules in a mutually beneficial way. Our proposed framework, TransCues, is a pyramidal transformer encoder-decoder architecture to segment transparent objects. W e empirically show that these two modules can be used together effectively, improving overall performance across various benchmark datasets, including glass object semantic segmentation, mirror object semantic segmentation, and generic segmentation datasets.


An Enhanced Audio Feature Tailored for Anomalous Sound Detection Based on Pre-trained Models

Anomalous Sound Detection (ASD) aims at identifying anomalous sounds from machines and has gained extensive research interests from both academia and industry. However, the uncertainty of anomaly location and much redundant information such as noise in machine sounds hinder the improvement of ASD system performance. This paper proposes a novel audio feature of filter banks with evenly distributed intervals, ensuring equal attention to all frequency ranges in the audio, which enhances the detection of anomalies in machine sounds. Moreover, based on pre-trained models, this paper presents a parameter-free feature enhancement approach to remove redundant information in machine audio. It is believed that this parameter-free strategy facilitates the effective transfer of universal knowledge from pre-trained tasks to the ASD task during model fine-tuning. Evaluation results on the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) 2024 Challenge dataset demonstrate significant improvements in ASD performance with our proposed methods.


LMSeg: Unleashing the Power of Large-Scale Models for Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation

It is widely agreed that open-vocabulary-based approaches outperform classical closed-set training solutions for recognizing unseen objects in images for semantic segmentation. Existing open-vocabulary approaches leverage vision-language models, such as CLIP, to align visual features with rich semantic features acquired through pre-training on large-scale vision-language datasets. However, the text prompts employed in these methods are short phrases based on fixed templates, failing to capture comprehensive object attributes. Moreover, while the CLIP model excels at exploiting image-level features, it is less effective at pixel-level representation, which is crucial for semantic segmentation tasks. In this work, we propose to alleviate the above-mentioned issues by leveraging multiple large-scale models to enhance the alignment between fine-grained visual features and enriched linguistic features. Specifically, our method employs large language models (LLMs) to generate enriched language prompts with diverse visual attributes for each category, including color, shape/size, and texture/material. Additionally, for enhanced visual feature extraction, the SAM model is adopted as a supplement to the CLIP visual encoder through a proposed learnable weighted fusion strategy. Built upon these techniques, our method, termed LMSeg, achieves state-of-the-art performance across all major open-vocabulary segmentation benchmarks. The code will be made available soon.


pFLFE: Cross-silo Personalized Federated Learning via Feature Enhancement on Medical Image Segmentation

In medical image segmentation, personalized cross-silo federated learning (FL) is becoming popular for utilizing varied data across healthcare settings to overcome data scarcity and privacy concerns. However, existing methods often suffer from client drift, leading to inconsistent performance and delayed training. We propose a new framework, Personalized Federated Learning via Feature Enhancement (pFLFE), designed to mitigate these challenges. pFLFE consists of two main stages: feature enhancement and supervised learning. The first stage improves differentiation between foreground and background features, and the second uses these enhanced features for learning from segmentation masks. We also design an alternative training approach that requires fewer communication rounds without compromising segmentation quality, even with limited communication resources. Through experiments on three medical segmentation tasks, we demonstrate that pFLFE outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.


Repairing Catastrophic-Neglect in Text-to-Image Diffusion Models via Attention-Guided Feature Enhancement

Text-to-Image Diffusion Models (T2I DMs) have garnered significant attention for their ability to generate high-quality images from textual descriptions. However, these models often produce images that do not fully align with the input prompts, resulting in semantic inconsistencies. The most prominent issue among these semantic inconsistencies is catastrophic-neglect, where the images generated by T2I DMs miss key objects mentioned in the prompt. We first conduct an empirical study on this issue, exploring the prevalence of catastrophic-neglect, potential mitigation strategies with feature enhancement, and the insights gained. Guided by the empirical findings, we propose an automated repair approach named Patcher to address catastrophic-neglect in T2I DMs. Specifically, Patcher first determines whether there are any neglected objects in the prompt, and then applies attention-guided feature enhancement to these neglected objects, resulting in a repaired prompt. Experimental results on three versions of Stable Diffusion demonstrate that Patcher effectively repairs the issue of catastrophic-neglect, achieving 10.1%-16.3% higher Correct Rate in image generation compared to baselines.


Tightly-coupled Visual-DVL-Inertial Odometry for Robot-based Ice-water Boundary Exploration

Robotic underwater systems, e.g., Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), are promising tools for collecting biogeochemical data at the ice-water interface for scientific advancements. However, state estimation, i.e., localization, is a well-known problem for robotic systems, especially, for the ones that travel underwater. In this paper, we present a tightly-coupled multi-sensors fusion framework to increase localization accuracy that is robust to sensor failure. Visual images, Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Pressure sensor are integrated into the state-of-art Multi-State Constraint Kalman Filter (MSCKF) for state estimation. Besides that a new keyframe-based state clone mechanism and a new DVL-aided feature enhancement are presented to further improve the localization performance. The proposed method is validated with a data set collected in the field under frozen ice, and the result is compared with 6 other different sensor fusion setups. Overall, the result with the keyframe enabled and DVL-aided feature enhancement yields the best performance with a Root-mean-square error of less than 2 m compared to the ground truth path with a total traveling distance of about 200 m.


Can SAM Count Anything? An Empirical Study on SAM Counting

Meta AI recently released the Segment Anything model (SAM), which has garnered attention due to its impressive performance in class-agnostic segmenting. In this study, we explore the use of SAM for the challenging task of few-shot object counting, which involves counting objects of an unseen category by providing a few bounding boxes of examples. We compare SAM's performance with other few-shot counting methods and find that it is currently unsatisfactory without further fine-tuning, particularly for small and crowded objects. Expanding Sparse Guidance for Stereo Matching

The performance of image based stereo estimation suffers from lighting variations, repetitive patterns and homogeneous appearance. Moreover, to achieve good performance, stereo supervision requires sufficient densely-labeled data, which are hard to obtain. In this work, we leverage small amount of data with very sparse but accurate disparity cues from LiDAR to bridge the gap. We propose a novel sparsity expansion technique to expand the sparse cues concerning RGB images for local feature enhancement. The feature enhancement method can be easily applied to any stereo estimation algorithms with cost volume at the test stage. Extensive experiments on stereo datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness across different backbones on domain adaption and self-supervision scenario. Our sparsity expansion method outperforms previous methods in terms of disparity by more than 2 pixel error on KITTI Stereo 2012 and 3 pixel error on KITTI Stereo 2015. Our approach significantly boosts the existing state-of-the-art stereo algorithms with extremely sparse cues.

Sure, no data scientist role is the same, and that's the reason for the inquiry. So many potential data scientists are interested in knowing what it is that those on the other side keep themselves busy with all day, and so I thought that having a few connections provide their insight might be a useful endeavor.
