Google CEO Thinks AI Will Be More Profound Change Than Fire

Sign up here to receive the Davos Diary, a special daily newsletter that will run from Jan. 20-24. Google's chief executive officer has left no doubt about how important he thinks artificial intelligence will be to humanity. "AI is one of the most profound things we're working on as humanity. It's more profound than fire or electricity," Alphabet Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai said in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday. Alphabet, which owns Google, has had to grapple with its role in the development of AI, including managing employee revolts against its work on the technology for the U.S. government.

In 2018, a group of influential software engineers successfully delayed the development of a security feature that would've helped the company win military contracts.

TMGcore Unveils Robot-Managed Immersion Data Centers

#artificialintelligence

Are you ready for robots swapping out high-density servers immersed in fluid? TMGcore believes the market is indeed ready for its OTTO data center platform, which is launching at the SC19 conference in Denver. The two-year old company has been refining its technology in a Dallas-area data center, test-driving its two-phase immersion cooling with bitcoin mining hardware, and developing custom servers, a series of micro-data center enclosures, and a robotic system to replace servers. "We've redefined what a data center looks like," said John-David Enright, the CEO of TMGcore, which is partnering with Vertiv, Jabil, Corgan, 3M and Dell Technologies to bring its offering to the data center market. TMGcore says the OTTO platform offers extreme density and efficiency that can radically reduce the space and cost to deploy IT infrastructure. The OTTO system is perhaps the most ambitious effort yet to create an autonomous data center that can be managed by software and robotics.

Dealing with Stochasticity in Biological ODE Models

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Mathematical modeling with Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) has proven to be extremely successful in a variety of fields, including biology. However, these models are completely deterministic given a certain set of initial conditions. We convert mathematical ODE models of three benchmark biological systems to Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs). The DBN model can handle model uncertainty and data uncertainty in a principled manner. They can be used for temporal data mining for noisy and missing variables. We apply Particle Filtering algorithm to infer the model variables by re-estimating the models parameters of various biological ODE models. The model parameters are automatically re-estimated using temporal evidence in the form of data streams. The results show that DBNs are capable of inferring the model variables of the ODE model with high accuracy in situations where data is missing, incomplete, sparse and irregular and true values of model parameters are not known.
