AI Standardized Patient Improves Human Conversations in Advanced Cancer Care

These are high-stakes conversations where clinicians must navigate weighty issues, where a poorly chosen word could have lasting consequences on a patient's final days and the memories their loved ones carry forward. Low-quality SIC has been associated with poor patient and family prognostic understanding [5], perceived lack of emotional support [6], lower quality healthcare outcomes and higher costs [7-13]. Communication with advanced-stage cancer patients specifically poses a variety of challenges, including: the volume and complexity of medical information, often fast-paced office visits, and the emotional burden of these life-changing conversations, for clinicians, patients, and their loved ones. Despite their extensive medical training, many physicians struggle to deliver difficult news effectively [14-16], often resulting in patient anxiety, misaligned treatment decisions, and reduced quality of care [17-19]. Also costly is the terms of expensive and potentially burdensome treatments as well as malpractice claims[20].

EMPOWER: Embodied Multi-role Open-vocabulary Planning with Online Grounding and Execution

Abstract-- Task planning for robots in real-life settings presents significant challenges. These challenges stem from three primary issues: the difficulty in identifying grounded sequences of steps to achieve a goal; the lack of a standardized mapping between high-level actions and low-level commands; and the challenge of maintaining low computational overhead given the limited resources of robotic hardware. We introduce EMPOWER, a framework designed for open-vocabulary online grounding and planning for embodied agents aimed at addressing these issues. By leveraging efficient pre-trained foundation models and a multi-role mechanism, EMPOWER demonstrates notable improvements in grounded planning and execution. Quantitative results highlight the effectiveness of our approach, achieving an average success rate of 0.73 across six different real-life scenarios using a TIAGo robot.

Empower Your Model with Longer and Better Context Comprehension

Recently, with the emergence of numerous Large Language Models (LLMs), the implementation of AI has entered a new era. Irrespective of these models' own capacity and structure, there is a growing demand for LLMs to possess enhanced comprehension of longer and more complex contexts with relatively smaller sizes. Models often encounter an upper limit when processing sequences of sentences that extend beyond their comprehension capacity and result in off-topic or even chaotic responses. While several recent works attempt to address this issue in various ways, they rarely focus on "why models are unable to compensate or strengthen their capabilities on their own". In this paper, we thoroughly investigate the nature of information transfer within LLMs and propose a novel technique called Attention Transition. This technique empowers models to achieve longer and better context comprehension with minimal additional training or impact on generation fluency. Our experiments are conducted on the challenging XSum dataset using LLaMa-7b model with context token length ranging from 800 to 1900. Results demonstrate that we achieve substantial improvements compared with the original generation results evaluated by GPT4.
