Refinements on the Complementary PDB Construction Mechanism

Pattern database (PDB) is one of the most popular automated heuristic generation techniques. A PDB maps states in a planning task to abstract states by considering a subset of variables and stores their optimal costs to the abstract goal in a look up table. As the result of the progress made on symbolic search over recent years, symbolic-PDB-based planners achieved impressive results in the International Planning Competition (IPC) 2018. Among them, Complementary 1 (CPC1) tied as the second best planners and the best non-portfolio planners in the cost optimal track, only 2 tasks behind the winner. It uses a combination of different pattern generation algorithms to construct PDBs that are complementary to existing ones. As shown in the post contest experiments, there is room for improvement. In this paper, we would like to present our work on refining the PDB construction mechanism of CPC1. By testing on IPC 2018 benchmarks, the results show that a significant improvement is made on our modified planner over the original version.

In this paper we solve fundamental graph optimization problems like Maximum Clique and Minimum Coloring with recent advances of Monte-Carlo Search. The optimization problems are implemented as single-agent games in a generic state-space search framework, roughly comparable to what is encoded in PDDL for an action planner.

Heuristic search planning effectively finds solutions for large planning problems, but since the estimates are either not admissible or too weak, optimal solutions are found in rare cases only. In contrast, heuristic pattern databases are known to significantly improve lower bound estimates for optimally solving challenging single-agent problems like the 24-Puzzle or Rubik's Cube. This paper studies the effect of pattern databases in the context of deterministic planning. Given a fixed state description based on instantiated predicates, we provide a general abstraction scheme to automatically create admissible domain-independent memory-based heuristics for planning problems, where abstractions are found in factorizing the planning space. We evaluate the impact of pattern database heuristics in A* and hill climbing algorithms for a collection of benchmark domains.


Generalized Nested Rollout Policy Adaptation

Nested Rollout Policy Adaptation (NRPA) is a Monte Carlo search algorithm for single player games. In this paper we propose to generalize NRPA with a temperature and a bias and to analyze theoretically the algorithms. The generalized algorithm is named GNRPA. Experiments show it improves on NRPA for different application domains: SameGame and the Traveling Salesman Problem with Time Windows.


Revisiting Immediate Duplicate Detection in External Memory Search

External memory search algorithms store the open and closed lists in secondary memory (e.g., hard disks) to augment limited internal memory. To minimize expensive random access in hard disks, these algorithms typically employ delayed duplicate detection (DDD), at the expense of processing more nodes than algorithms using immediate duplicate detection (IDD). Given the recent ubiquity of solid state drives (SSDs), we revisit the use of IDD in external memory search. We propose segmented compression, an improved IDD method that significantly reduces the number of false positive access into secondary memory. We show that A*-IDD, an external search variant of A* that uses segmented compression-based IDD, significantly improves upon previous open-addressing based IDD. We also show that A*-IDD can outperform DDD-based A* on some domains in domain-independent planning.


Polynomial-Time Reformulations of LTL Temporally Extended Goals into Final-State Goals

Linear temporal logic (LTL) is an expressive language that allows specifying temporally extended goals and preferences. A general approach to dealing with general LTL properties in planning is by ``compiling them away''; i.e., in a pre-processing phase, all LTL formulas are converted into simple, non-temporal formulas that can be evaluated in a planning state. This is accomplished by first generating a finite-state automaton for the formula, and then by introducing new fluents that are used to capture all possible runs of the automaton. Unfortunately, current translation approaches are worst-case exponential on the size of the LTL formula. In this paper, we present a polynomial approach to compiling away LTL goals. Our method relies on the exploitation of alternating automata. Since alternating automata are different from non-deterministic automata, our translation technique does not capture all possible runs in a planning state and thus is very different from previous approaches. We prove that our translation is sound and complete, and evaluate it empirically showing that it has strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, we find classes of formulas in which it seems to outperform significantly the current state of the art.


BDDs Strike Back (in AI Planning)

The cost-optimal track of the international planning competition in 2014 has seen an unexpected outcome. Different to the precursing competition in 2011, where explicit-state heuristic search planning scored best, advances in the state-set exploration with BDDs showed a significant lead. In this paper we review the outcome of the competition, briefly looking into the internals of the competing systems.

In looking back on the last five to ten years of work in heuristic search a few trends emerge. First, there has been a broadening of research topics studied. Second, there has been a deepened understanding of the theoretical foundations of search. Third, and finally, there have been increased connections with work in other fields. This paper, corresponding to a AAAI 2012 invited talk on recent work in heuristic search, highlights these trends in a number of areas of heuristic search. It is our opinion that the sum of these trends reflects the growth in the field and the fact that heuristic search has come of age.


The Deterministic Part of IPC-4: An Overview

We provide an overview of the organization and results of the deterministic part of the 4th International Planning Competition, i.e., of the part concerned with evaluating systems doing deterministic planning. IPC-4 attracted even more competing systems than its already large predecessors, and the competition event was revised in several important respects. After giving an introduction to the IPC, we briefly explain the main differences between the deterministic part of IPC-4 and its predecessors. We then introduce formally the language used, called PDDL2.2 that extends PDDL2.1 by derived predicates and timed initial literals. We list the competing systems and overview the results of the competition. The entire set of data is far too large to be presented in full. We provide a detailed summary; the complete data is available in an online appendix. We explain how we awarded the competition prizes.


Improving Cost-Optimal Domain-Independent Symbolic Planning

Symbolic search with BDDs has shown remarkable performance for cost-optimal deterministic planning by exploiting a succinct representation and exploration of state sets. In this paper we enhance BDD-based planning by applying a combination of domain-independent search techniques: the optimization of the variable ordering in the BDD by approximating the linear arrangement problem, pattern selection for improved construction of search heuristics in form of symbolic partial pattern databases, and a decision procedure for the amount of bidirection in the symbolic search process.
