The Future of the Metaverse + AI and Data Looks Bright

#artificialintelligence

We're on the cusp of major breakthroughs in the metaverse, that collective world of new augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences that is gaining steam. The new meta modality will not only be a huge new source of user and behavioral data for enterprises, but it will be a fertile ground for deploying rapidly maturing AI technologies like NLP and computer vision. AR and VR technologies have been simmering on the backburner for years. Up to this point, VR has primarily been used for immersive video games, although a few enterprise software companies have dabbled in AR and VR interfaces, including Looker before it was snapped up by Google Cloud. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg put the collective worlds of AR and VR, i.e. the metaverse, firmly on the front burner last month when he announced Facebook was changing its name to Meta.

Artificial intelligence and chemistry compute at Lanxess

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) isn't magic, it's just really complicated math, said Greg Mulholland, CEO and founder of Citrine Informatics (Redwood City, CA), at a press roundtable hosted by Lanxess (Cologne, Germany) at K 2019. But Mulholland's hosts seemed quite bedazzled by his AI-enabled platform, nonetheless. Lanxess is the first company to adopt Citrine's technology at scale, and Dr. Markus Eckert, Senior Vice President, Head of Business Unit Urethane Systems at Lanxess was eager to explain what it means for customers. Citrine is a Silicon Valley startup that couldn't be more niche: It has developed a platform that leverages data and AI specifically to accelerate the development of materials and chemicals. Citrine has been recognized for technology innovation by the World Economic Forum as a Tech Pioneer, and collaborates with world-class academic institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the University of California, Berkeley.

'Anonymous' browsing data can be easily exposed, German researchers reveal

The Guardian

A judge's porn preferences and the medication used by a German MP were among the personal data uncovered by two German researchers who acquired the "anonymous" browsing habits of more than three million German citizens. "What would you think," asked Svea Eckert, "if somebody showed up at your door saying: 'Hey, I have your complete browsing history – every day, every hour, every minute, every click you did on the web for the last month'? How would you think we got it: some shady hacker? It was much easier: you can just buy it." Eckert, a journalist, paired up with data scientist Andreas Dewes to acquire personal user data and see what they could glean from it.

AI, Augmented Reality and Drones Will Start to Reshape Small Businesses - Drones at Work

#artificialintelligence

Most small businesses are focused on the nuts and bolts of the IT needed to run their companies, including networks, cloud services and PCs. However, there are many emerging technologies that will likely have large impacts on how businesses are run in the years ahead. The consultancy PwC recently released a report highlighting what it calls eight tech "megatrends" that it thinks will have a large impact on businesses in the next three to seven years. The trends include artificial intelligence, augmented reality, blockchain technology, drones, Internet of Things, robotics, virtual reality and 3D printing. Some of them, like IoT, have been around for years and are already widely used, while others, like virtual reality or the use of blockchain for ledgers and transactions, are rapidly maturing.
