DynaMimicGen: A Data Generation Framework for Robot Learning of Dynamic Tasks

Learning robust manipulation policies typically requires large and diverse datasets, the collection of which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often impractical for dynamic environments. In this work, we introduce DynaMimicGen (D-MG), a scalable dataset generation framework that enables policy training from minimal human supervision while uniquely supporting dynamic task settings. Given only a few human demonstrations, D-MG first segments the demonstrations into meaningful sub-tasks, then leverages Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) to adapt and generalize the demonstrated behaviors to novel and dynamically changing environments. Improving prior methods that rely on static assumptions or simplistic trajectory interpolation, D-MG produces smooth, realistic, and task-consistent Cartesian trajectories that adapt in real time to changes in object poses, robot states, or scene geometry during task execution. Our method supports different scenarios - including scene layouts, object instances, and robot configurations - making it suitable for both static and highly dynamic manipulation tasks. We show that robot agents trained via imitation learning on D-MG-generated data achieve strong performance across long-horizon and contact-rich benchmarks, including tasks like cube stacking and placing mugs in drawers, even under unpredictable environment changes. By eliminating the need for extensive human demonstrations and enabling generalization in dynamic settings, D-MG offers a powerful and efficient alternative to manual data collection, paving the way toward scalable, autonomous robot learning.


Human-robot collaborative transport personalization via Dynamic Movement Primitives and velocity scaling

Nowadays, industries are showing a growing interest in human-robot collaboration, particularly for shared tasks. This requires intelligent strategies to plan a robot's motions, considering both task constraints and human-specific factors such as height and movement preferences. This work introduces a novel approach to generate personalized trajectories using Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs), enhanced with real-time velocity scaling based on human feedback. The method was rigorously tested in industrial-grade experiments, focusing on the collaborative transport of an engine cowl lip section. Comparative analysis between DMP-generated trajectories and a state-of-the-art motion planner (BiTRRT) highlights their adaptability combined with velocity scaling. Subjective user feedback further demonstrates a clear preference for DMP- based interactions. Objective evaluations, including physiological measurements from brain and skin activity, reinforce these findings, showcasing the advantages of DMPs in enhancing human-robot interaction and improving user experience.


Obstacle Avoidance using Dynamic Movement Primitives and Reinforcement Learning

Abstract--Learning-based motion planning can quickly generate near-optimal trajectories. However, it often requires either large training datasets or costly collection of human demonstrations. This work proposes an alternative approach that quickly generates smooth, near-optimal collision-free 3D Cartesian trajectories from a single artificial demonstration. The demonstration is encoded as a Dynamic Movement Primitive (DMP) and iteratively reshaped using policy-based reinforcement learning to create a diverse trajectory dataset for varying obstacle configurations. This dataset is used to train a neural network that takes as inputs the task parameters describing the obstacle dimensions and location, derived automatically from a point cloud, and outputs the DMP parameters that generate the trajectory. The approach is validated in simulation and real-robot experiments, outperforming a RRT -Connect baseline in terms of computation and execution time, as well as trajectory length, while supporting multi-modal trajectory generation for different obstacle geometries and end-effector dimensions. Interactive Expressive Motion Generation Using Dynamic Movement Primitives

Our goal is to enable social robots to interact autonomously with humans in a realistic, engaging, and expressive manner. The 12 Principles of Animation are a well-established framework animators use to create movements that make characters appear convincing, dynamic, and emotionally expressive. This paper proposes a novel approach that leverages Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) to implement key animation principles, providing a learnable, explainable, modulable, online adaptable and composable model for automatic expressive motion generation. DMPs, originally developed for general imitation learning in robotics and grounded in a spring-damper system design, offer mathematical properties that make them particularly suitable for this task. Specifically, they enable modulation of the intensities of individual principles and facilitate the decomposition of complex, expressive motion sequences into learnable and parametrizable primitives. We present the mathematical formulation of the parameterized animation principles and demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework through experiments and application on three robotic platforms with different kinematic configurations, in simulation, on actual robots and in a user study. Our results show that the approach allows for creating diverse and nuanced expressions using a single base model.


Beyond Predefined Actions: Integrating Behavior Trees and Dynamic Movement Primitives for Robot Learning from Demonstration

Interpretable policy representations like Behavior Trees (BTs) and Dynamic Motion Primitives (DMPs) enable robot skill transfer from human demonstrations, but each faces limitations: BTs require expert-crafted low-level actions, while DMPs lack high-level task logic. We address these limitations by integrating DMP controllers into a BT framework, jointly learning the BT structure and DMP actions from single demonstrations, thereby removing the need for predefined actions. Additionally, by combining BT decision logic with DMP motion generation, our method enhances policy interpretability, modularity, and adaptability for autonomous systems. Our approach readily affords both learning to replicate low-level motions and combining partial demonstrations into a coherent and easy-to-modify overall policy.


MeshDMP: Motion Planning on Discrete Manifolds using Dynamic Movement Primitives

An open problem in industrial automation is to reliably perform tasks requiring in-contact movements with complex workpieces, as current solutions lack the ability to seamlessly adapt to the workpiece geometry. In this paper, we propose a Learning from Demonstration approach that allows a robot manipulator to learn and generalise motions across complex surfaces by leveraging differential mathematical operators on discrete manifolds to embed information on the geometry of the workpiece extracted from triangular meshes, and extend the Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) framework to generate motions on the mesh surfaces. We also propose an effective strategy to adapt the motion to different surfaces, by introducing an isometric transformation of the learned forcing term. The resulting approach, namely MeshDMP, is evaluated both in simulation and real experiments, showing promising results in typical industrial automation tasks like car surface polishing.


Collaborative motion planning for multi-manipulator systems through Reinforcement Learning and Dynamic Movement Primitives

Robotic tasks often require multiple manipulators to enhance task efficiency and speed, but this increases complexity in terms of collaboration, collision avoidance, and the expanded state-action space. To address these challenges, we propose a multi-level approach combining Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) to generate adaptive, real-time trajectories for new tasks in dynamic environments using a demonstration library. This method ensures collision-free trajectory generation and efficient collaborative motion planning. We validate the approach through experiments in the PyBullet simulation environment with UR5e robotic manipulators.


Vision-Based Dexterous Motion Planning by Dynamic Movement Primitives with Human Hand Demonstration

This paper proposes a vision-based framework for a 7-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator, with the primary objective of facilitating its capacity to acquire information from human hand demonstrations for the execution of dexterous pick-and-place tasks. Most existing works only focus on the position demonstration without considering the orientations. In this paper, by employing a single depth camera, MediaPipe is applied to generate the three-dimensional coordinates of a human hand, thereby comprehensively recording the hand's motion, encompassing the trajectory of the wrist, orientation of the hand, and the grasp motion. A mean filter is applied during data pre-processing to smooth the raw data. The demonstration is designed to pick up an object at a specific angle, navigate around obstacles in its path and subsequently, deposit it within a sloped container. Deep Learning for Koopman-based Dynamic Movement Primitives

The challenge of teaching robots to perform dexterous manipulation, dynamic locomotion, or whole--body manipulation from a small number of demonstrations is an important research field that has attracted interest from across the robotics community. In this work, we propose a novel approach by joining the theories of Koopman Operators and Dynamic Movement Primitives to Learning from Demonstration. Our approach, named \gls{admd}, projects nonlinear dynamical systems into linear latent spaces such that a solution reproduces the desired complex motion. Use of an autoencoder in our approach enables generalizability and scalability, while the constraint to a linear system attains interpretability. Our results are comparable to the Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition on the LASA Handwriting dataset but with training on only a small fractions of the letters.


Robot Control based on Motor Primitives -- A Comparison of Two Approaches

Motor primitives are fundamental building blocks of a controller which enable dynamic robot behavior with minimal high-level intervention. By treating motor primitives as basic "modules," different modules can be sequenced or superimposed to generate a rich repertoire of motor behavior. In robotics, two distinct approaches have been proposed: Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) and Elementary Dynamic Actions (EDAs). While both approaches instantiate similar ideas, significant differences also exist. This paper attempts to clarify the distinction and provide a unifying view by delineating the similarities and differences between DMPs and EDAs. We provide eight robot control examples, including sequencing or superimposing movements, managing kinematic redundancy and singularity, obstacle avoidance, and managing physical interaction. We show that the two approaches clearly diverge in their implementation. We also discuss how DMPs and EDAs might be combined to get the best of both approaches. With this detailed comparison, we enable researchers to make informed decisions to select the most suitable approach for specific robot tasks and applications.
