Dojo: A Differentiable Physics Engine for Robotics

Dojo achieves stable simulation at low sample rates and conserves energy and momentum by employing a variational integrator. A nonlinear complementarity problem with second-order cones for friction models hard contact, and is reliably solved using a custom primal-dual interior-point method. Special properties of the interior-point method are exploited using implicit differentiation to efficiently compute smooth gradients that provide useful information through contact events. We demonstrate Dojo with a number of examples including: planning, policy optimization, and system identification, that demonstrate the engine's unique ability to simulate hard contact while providing smooth, analytic gradients.

Tesla (TSLA) will hold its second annual AI Day in Palo Alto, California, Friday evening. The six-hour event will include updates on Tesla (TSLA)'s work in artificial intelligence, "Full Self-Driving," its supercomputer "Dojo" and maybe a humanoid robot, according to invitations posted online by Tesla (TSLA) supporters. The event is expected to be live-streamed. Dojo is a supercomputer being designed to train AI systems to complete complex tasks like Tesla's driver-assistance systems Autopilot and "Full Self-Driving," which sometimes perform some driving tasks like steering and keeping up with traffic. Tesla's previous AI Day included detailed technical explanations of the company's work in a bid to attract leading engineers.

Tesla Believes Its Dojo AI System Will Help It Win the Self-Driving Car Race
Last year during Tesla's AI Day, the automaker unveiled its Dojo supercomputer. At the time, Tesla claimed the supercomputer was the world's most powerful training machine and would help the automaker teach its vehicles how to drive without any inputs from a human driver. While Tesla officially announced the system last year, the automaker provided more information on its Dojo supercomputer this year at the Hot Chips conference. Dojo's job is to take all of the video Tesla gathers from its fleet of Tesla cars on the road today and process it to learn how cars drive in the real world. Tesla sues former employee for allegedly stealing trade secrets and then attempting a cover-up
Tesla has sued a former employee who it is accusing of stealing trade secrets related to its supercomputer project, Bloomberg reported on Friday. According to a filing in the U.S. District Court in San Jose, thermal engineer Alexander Yatskov quit on May 2 after having joined the company only a few months earlier, in January. According to Tesla, Yatskov admitted to transferring confidential information to his personal devices and later handing over a "dummy" laptop after company officials confronted him on suspicion of theft. In addition to breaching a non-disclosure agreement intended to protect trade secrets, Bloomberg reports that Tesla is also accusing Yatskov of misrepresenting his experience and skills on his resume. Bloomberg also says that Yatskov declined to comment.
