Ultra-fast high-dynamic range imaging of Cygnus A with the R2D2 deep neural network series
A, Aghabiglou, S, Chu C, A, Jackson, A, Dabbech, Y, Wiaux
We present a novel AI approach for high-resolution high-dynamic range synthesis imaging by radio interferometry (RI) in astronomy. R2D2, standing for ``{R}esidual-to-{R}esidual {D}NN series for high-{D}ynamic range imaging'', is a model-based data-driven approach relying on hybrid deep neural networks (DNNs) and data-consistency updates. Its reconstruction is built as a series of residual images estimated as the outputs of DNNs, each taking the residual dirty image of the previous iteration as an input. The approach can be interpreted as a learned version of a matching pursuit approach, whereby model components are iteratively identified from residual dirty images, and of which CLEAN is a well-known example. We propose two variants of the R2D2 model, built upon two distinctive DNN architectures: a standard U-Net, and a novel unrolled architecture. We demonstrate their use for monochromatic intensity imaging on highly-sensitive observations of the radio galaxy Cygnus A at S band, from the Very Large Array (VLA). R2D2 is validated against CLEAN and the recent RI algorithms AIRI and uSARA, which respectively inject a learned implicit regularization and an advanced handcrafted sparsity-based regularization into the RI data. With only few terms in its series, the R2D2 model is able to deliver high-precision imaging, superseding the resolution of CLEAN, and matching the precision of AIRI and uSARA. In terms of computational efficiency, R2D2 runs at a fraction of the cost of AIRI and uSARA, and is also faster than CLEAN, opening the door to near real-time precision imaging in RI.

NASA's new space toilet on its way to the International Space Station
The sun is getting a close-up as NASA releases historic new photographs. Talk about "to boldly go." A new space toilet is making its way to the crew of the International Space Station aboard a Cygnus spacecraft. "Its features improve on current space toilet operations and help NASA prepare for future missions, including those to the Moon and Mars," explained NASA, in a statement. "The Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) demonstrates a compact toilet and the Urine Transfer System that further automates waste management and storage."

Astronaut Takuya Onishi uses robotic arm to capture cargo ship at ISS
Takuya Onishi used a robotic arm to safely perform the delicate mission of capturing the Cygnus cargo ship upon its arrival at the International Space Station. Astronaut Onishi, 40, maneuvered the arm and attached the Cygnus to the Earth-facing port of the ISS Node-One module at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday Japan time. His fellow Japanese astronaut, Kimiya Yui, 46, performed a similar maneuver during his stint aboard the ISS in August 2015 when he captured Japan's Kounotori resupply craft. The Cygnus ship was developed by U.S. aerospace and defense company Orbital ATK Inc. Its approach to the ISS and docking employs the same technology as the Kounotori.

Japanese astronaut Onishi snags first Antares cargo delivery to ISS in two years
CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA/MIAMI – The International Space Station received its first shipment from a private, Virginia-based company in more than two years Sunday following a sensational nighttime launch observed 250 miles up and down the East Coast. Orbital ATK's cargo ship pulled up at the space station bearing 5,000 pounds of food, equipment and research. "What a beautiful vehicle," said Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi, who used the station's big robot arm to grab the vessel. The capture occurred as the spacecraft soared 250 miles above Kyrgyzstan; Onishi likened it to the last 195 meters of a marathon. Last Monday's liftoff from Wallops Island was the first by an Antares rocket since a 2014 launch explosion.

SpaceX delivers the world's first inflatable room to the ISS
SpaceX has made good on a high-priority delivery - the world's first inflatable room for astronauts. A SpaceX Dragon cargo ship arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, two days after launching from Cape Canaveral, and astronauts used a robot arm to capture the capsule. The Dragon holds 7,000lbs of freight, including the soft-sided compartment built by Bigelow Aerospace. The pioneering pod, packed tightly for launch, should swell to the size of a small bedroom once filled with air next month.

ISS snags Dragon delivery of space gear, including first inflatable room
CAPE, CANAVERAL – SpaceX has made good on a high-priority delivery: the world's first inflatable room for astronauts. A SpaceX Dragon cargo ship arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, two days after launching from Cape Canaveral. Station astronauts used a robot arm to capture the Dragon, orbiting 250 miles (400 km) above Earth. The Dragon holds 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg) of freight, including the soft-sided compartment built by Bigelow Aerospace. The pioneering pod -- packed tightly for launch -- should swell to the size of a small bedroom once filled with air next month.

Orbital's Cygnus arrives at space station with Easter delivery
The six astronauts at the International Space Station got an early Easter treat this weekend with the arrival of a supply ship full of fresh food and experiments. Instead of the usual bunny, Saturday's delivery came via a swan -- Orbital ATK's Cygnus capsule, named after the swan constellation. The cargo carrier rocketed away from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday night. NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra used the station's big robot arm to grab the capsule, as the two craft soared 250 miles above the Indian Ocean. Four hours later, the capsule was bolted firmly to the complex.

Resupply mission to International Space Station makes successful launch
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Fresh supplies shipped out late Tuesday for the International Space Station, where the shelves finally are getting full after a string of failed deliveries. Launching beneath the light of a nearly full moon, the unmanned Atlas V rocket provided late-night sparkle as it headed north with its precious cargo and paralleled the East Coast on its way to orbit. Orbital ATK's Cygnus capsule holds nearly 8,000 pounds of food, equipment and scientific research for NASA, including a commercial-quality 3-D printer anyone can rent and experimental robotic grippers modeled after the thousands of sticky hairs on geckos' feet. There's also a fire experiment that will remain on the Cygnus. Researchers will ignite a large-scale blaze, in a contained box, to see how it spreads in weightlessness.
