Profiling Electric Vehicles via Early Charging Voltage Patterns

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining adoption as a sustainable alternative to fuel-powered vehicles, making secure charging infrastructure essential. Despite traditional authentication protocols, recent results showed that attackers may steal energy through tailored relay attacks. One countermeasure is leveraging the EV's fingerprint on the current exchanged during charging. However, existing methods focus on the final charging stage, allowing malicious actors to consume substantial energy before being detected and repudiated. This underscores the need for earlier and more effective authentication methods to prevent unauthorized charging. Meanwhile, profiling raises privacy concerns, as uniquely identifying EVs through charging patterns could enable user tracking. In this paper, we propose a framework for uniquely identifying EVs using physical measurements from the early charging stages. We hypothesize that voltage behavior early in the process exhibits similar characteristics to current behavior in later stages. By extracting features from early voltage measurements, we demonstrate the feasibility of EV profiling. Our approach improves existing methods by enabling faster and more reliable vehicle identification. We test our solution on a dataset of 7408 usable charges from 49 EVs, achieving up to 0.86 accuracy. Feature importance analysis shows that near-optimal performance is possible with just 10 key features, improving efficiency alongside our lightweight models. This research lays the foundation for a novel authentication factor while exposing potential privacy risks from unauthorized access to charging data.

Algorithmic Control Improves Residential Building Energy and EV Management when PV Capacity is High but Battery Capacity is Low

Efficient energy management in prosumer households is key to alleviating grid stress in an energy transition marked by electric vehicles (EV), renewable energies and battery storage. However, it is unclear how households optimize prosumer EV charging. Here we study real-world data from 90 households on fixed-rate electricity tariffs in German-speaking countries to investigate the potential of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and other control approaches (Rule-Based, Model Predictive Control) to manage the dynamic and uncertain environment of Home Energy Management (HEM) and optimize household charging patterns. The DRL agent efficiently aligns charging of EV and battery storage with photovoltaic (PV) surplus. We find that frequent EV charging transactions, early EV connections and PV surplus increase optimization potential. A detailed analysis of nine households (1 hour resolution, 1 year) demonstrates that high battery capacity facilitates self optimization; in this case further algorithmic control shows little value. In cases with relatively low battery capacity, algorithmic control with DRL improves energy management and cost savings by a relevant margin. This result is further corroborated by our simulation of a synthetic household. We conclude that prosumer households with optimization potential would profit from DRL, thus benefiting also the full electricity system and its decarbonization.

Large Neighborhood Search and Bitmask Dynamic Programming for Wireless Mobile Charging Electric Vehicle Routing Problems in Medical Transportation

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is critical to achieving sustainable transportation, but challenges such as limited driving range and insufficient charging infrastructure have hindered the widespread adoption of EVs, especially in time-sensitive logistics such as medical transportation. This paper presents a new model to break through this barrier by combining wireless mobile charging technology with optimization. We propose the Wireless Mobile Charging Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (WMC-EVRP), which enables Medical Transportation Electric Vehicles (MTEVs) to be charged while traveling via Mobile Charging Carts (MCTs). This eliminates the time wastage of stopping for charging and ensures uninterrupted operation of MTEVs for such time-sensitive transportation problems. However, in this problem, the decisions of these two types of heterogeneous vehicles are coupled with each other, which greatly increases the difficulty of vehicle routing optimizations. To address this complex problem, we develop a mathematical model and a tailored meta-heuristic algorithm that combines Bit Mask Dynamic Programming (BDP) and Large Neighborhood Search (LNS). The BDP approach efficiently optimizes charging strategies, while the LNS framework utilizes custom operators to optimize the MTEV routes under capacity and synchronization constraints. Our approach outperforms traditional solvers in providing solutions for medium and large instances. Using actual hospital locations in Singapore as data, we validated the practical applicability of the model through extensive experiments and provided important insights into minimizing costs and ensuring the timely delivery of healthcare services.

Breaking the Pre-Planning Barrier: Real-Time Adaptive Coordination of Mission and Charging UAVs Using Graph Reinforcement Learning

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are pivotal in applications such as search and rescue and environmental monitoring, excelling in intelligent perception tasks. However, their limited battery capacity hinders long-duration and long-distance missions. Charging UAVs (CUAVs) offers a potential solution by recharging mission UAVs (MUAVs), but existing methods rely on impractical pre-planned routes, failing to enable organic cooperation and limiting mission efficiency. We introduce a novel multi-agent deep reinforcement learning model named \textbf{H}eterogeneous \textbf{G}raph \textbf{A}ttention \textbf{M}ulti-agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (HGAM), designed to dynamically coordinate MUAVs and CUAVs. This approach maximizes data collection, geographical fairness, and energy efficiency by allowing UAVs to adapt their routes in real-time to current task demands and environmental conditions without pre-planning. Our model uses heterogeneous graph attention networks (GATs) to present heterogeneous agents and facilitate efficient information exchange. It operates within an actor-critic framework. Simulation results show that our model significantly improves cooperation among heterogeneous UAVs, outperforming existing methods in several metrics, including data collection rate and charging efficiency.

Dynamic Pricing for Electric Vehicle Charging

Dynamic pricing is a promising strategy to address the challenges of smart charging, as traditional time-of-use (ToU) rates and stationary pricing (SP) do not dynamically react to changes in operating conditions, reducing revenue for charging station (CS) vendors and affecting grid stability. Previous studies evaluated single objectives or linear combinations of objectives for EV CS pricing solutions, simplifying trade-offs and preferences among objectives. We develop a novel formulation for the dynamic pricing problem by addressing multiple conflicting objectives efficiently instead of solely focusing on one objective or metric, as in earlier works. We find optimal trade-offs or Pareto solutions efficiently using Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms (NSGA) II and NSGA III. A dynamic pricing model quantifies the relationship between demand and price while simultaneously solving multiple conflicting objectives, such as revenue, quality of service (QoS), and peak-to-average ratios (PAR). A single method can only address some of the above aspects of dynamic pricing comprehensively. We present a three-part dynamic pricing approach using a Bayesian model, multi-objective optimization, and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) using pseudo-weight vectors. To address the research gap in CS pricing, our method selects solutions using revenue, QoS, and PAR metrics simultaneously. Two California charging sites' real-world data validates our approach.

Multi-Agent Based Simulation for Investigating Centralized Charging Strategies and their Impact on Electric Vehicle Home Charging Ecosystem

This paper addresses the critical integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the electricity grid, essential for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The rapid increase in EV adoption poses significant challenges to the existing grid infrastructure, particularly in managing the increasing electricity demand and mitigating the risk of grid overloads. Centralized EV charging strategies are investigated due to their potential to optimize grid stability and efficiency, compared to decentralized approaches that may exacerbate grid stress. Utilizing a multi-agent based simulation model, the study provides a realistic representation of the electric vehicle home charging ecosystem in a case study of Strib, Denmark. The findings show that the Earliest-deadline-first and Round Robin performs best with 100% EV adoption in terms of EV user satisfaction. The simulation considers a realistic adoption curve, EV charging strategies, EV models, and driving patterns to capture the full ecosystem dynamics over a long-term period with high resolution (hourly). Additionally, the study offers detailed load profiles for future distribution grids, demonstrating how centralized charging strategies can efficiently manage grid loads and prevent overloads. Decentralized Smart Charging of Large-Scale EVs using Adaptive Multi-Agent Multi-Armed Bandits

The drastic growth of electric vehicles and photovoltaics can introduce new challenges, such as electrical current congestion and voltage limit violations due to peak load demands. These issues can be mitigated by controlling the operation of electric vehicles i.e., smart charging. Centralized smart charging solutions have already been proposed in the literature. But such solutions may lack scalability and suffer from inherent drawbacks of centralization, such as a single point of failure, and data privacy concerns. Decentralization can help tackle these challenges. In this paper, a fully decentralized smart charging system is proposed using the philosophy of adaptive multi-agent systems. The proposed system utilizes multi-armed bandit learning to handle uncertainties in the system. The presented system is decentralized, scalable, real-time, model-free, and takes fairness among different players into account. A detailed case study is also presented for performance evaluation.

AutoCharge: Autonomous Charging for Perpetual Quadrotor Missions

Battery endurance represents a key challenge for long-term autonomy and long-range operations, especially in the case of aerial robots. In this paper, we propose AutoCharge, an autonomous charging solution for quadrotors that combines a portable ground station with a flexible, lightweight charging tether and is capable of universal, highly efficient, and robust charging. We design and manufacture a pair of circular magnetic connectors to ensure a precise orientation-agnostic electrical connection between the ground station and the charging tether. Moreover, we supply the ground station with an electromagnet that largely increases the tolerance to localization and control errors during the docking maneuver, while still guaranteeing smooth un-docking once the charging process is completed. We demonstrate AutoCharge on a perpetual 10 hours quadrotor flight experiment and show that the docking and un-docking performance is solidly repeatable, enabling perpetual quadrotor flight missions.

Transfer Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Large-scale V2G Continuous Charging Coordination with Renewable Energy Sources

Due to the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the technological advancement of EV electronics, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technique and large-scale scheduling algorithms have been developed to achieve a high level of renewable energy and power grid stability. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method for the continuous charging/discharging coordination strategy in aggregating large-scale EVs in V2G mode with renewable energy sources (RES). The DRL coordination strategy can efficiently optimize the electric vehicle aggregator's (EVA's) real-time charging/discharging power with the state of charge (SOC) constraints of the EVA and the individual EV. Compared with uncontrolled charging, the load variance is reduced by 97.37$\%$ and the charging cost by 76.56$\%$. The DRL coordination strategy further demonstrates outstanding transfer learning ability to microgrids with RES and large-scale EVA, as well as the complicated weekly scheduling. The DRL coordination strategy demonstrates flexible, adaptable, and scalable performance for the large-scale V2G under realistic operating conditions.
