2026 is off to a hopeful start for these critically endangered whales
At least 18 new baby North Atlantic right whales have been spotted swimming with their mothers. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. While most of us were feasting on holiday foods over the past few weeks, the New England Aquarium was busy counting North Atlantic right whale () mom-calf pairs off the coast of Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. "Congrats to all of these North Atlantic right whale moms!" reads a social media post by the aquarium highlighting six recent sightings, including Juno--an over 40-year-old mother with her ninth documented calf spotted on December 27. On January 8, the count jumped up to 18 calves, according to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium .

Do LLMs Really Forget? Evaluating Unlearning with Knowledge Correlation and Confidence Awareness
Wei, Rongzhe, Niu, Peizhi, Hsu, Hans Hao-Hsun, Wu, Ruihan, Yin, Haoteng, Ghassemi, Mohsen, Li, Yifan, Potluru, Vamsi K., Chien, Eli, Chaudhuri, Kamalika, Milenkovic, Olgica, Li, Pan
Machine unlearning techniques aim to mitigate unintended memorization in large language models (LLMs). However, existing approaches predominantly focus on the explicit removal of isolated facts, often overlooking latent inferential dependencies and the non-deterministic nature of knowledge within LLMs. Consequently, facts presumed forgotten may persist implicitly through correlated information. To address these challenges, we propose a knowledge unlearning evaluation framework that more accurately captures the implicit structure of real-world knowledge by representing relevant factual contexts as knowledge graphs with associated confidence scores. We further develop an inference-based evaluation protocol leveraging powerful LLMs as judges; these judges reason over the extracted knowledge subgraph to determine unlearning success. Our LLM judges utilize carefully designed prompts and are calibrated against human evaluations to ensure their trustworthiness and stability. Extensive experiments on our newly constructed benchmark demonstrate that our framework provides a more realistic and rigorous assessment of unlearning performance. Moreover, our findings reveal that current evaluation strategies tend to overestimate unlearning effectiveness. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/Graph-COM/Knowledge_Unlearning.git.

SafeChat: A Framework for Building Trustworthy Collaborative Assistants and a Case Study of its Usefulness
Srivastava, Biplav, Lakkaraju, Kausik, Gupta, Nitin, Nagpal, Vansh, Muppasani, Bharath C., Jones, Sara E.
Collaborative assistants, or chatbots, are data-driven decision support systems that enable natural interaction for task completion. While they can meet critical needs in modern society, concerns about their reliability and trustworthiness persist. In particular, Large Language Model (LLM)-based chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek are becoming more accessible. However, such chatbots have limitations, including their inability to explain response generation, the risk of generating problematic content, the lack of standardized testing for reliability, and the need for deep AI expertise and extended development times. These issues make chatbots unsuitable for trust-sensitive applications like elections or healthcare. To address these concerns, we introduce SafeChat, a general architecture for building safe and trustworthy chatbots, with a focus on information retrieval use cases. Key features of SafeChat include: (a) safety, with a domain-agnostic design where responses are grounded and traceable to approved sources (provenance), and 'do-not-respond' strategies to prevent harmful answers; (b) usability, with automatic extractive summarization of long responses, traceable to their sources, and automated trust assessments to communicate expected chatbot behavior, such as sentiment; and (c) fast, scalable development, including a CSV-driven workflow, automated testing, and integration with various devices. We implemented SafeChat in an executable framework using the open-source chatbot platform Rasa. A case study demonstrates its application in building ElectionBot-SC, a chatbot designed to safely disseminate official election information. SafeChat is being used in many domains, validating its potential, and is available at: https://github.com/ai4society/trustworthy-chatbot.

A deep causal inference model for fully-interpretable travel behaviour analysis
Transport policy assessment often involves causal questions, yet the causal inference capabilities of traditional travel behavioural models are at best limited. We present the deep CAusal infeRence mOdel for traveL behavIour aNAlysis (CAROLINA), a framework that explicitly models causality in travel behaviour, enhances predictive accuracy, and maintains interpretability by leveraging causal inference, deep learning, and traditional discrete choice modelling. Within this framework, we introduce a Generative Counterfactual model for forecasting human behaviour by adapting the Normalizing Flow method. Through the case studies of virtual reality-based pedestrian crossing behaviour, revealed preference travel behaviour from London, and synthetic data, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed models in uncovering causal relationships, prediction accuracy, and assessing policy interventions. Our results show that intervention mechanisms that can reduce pedestrian stress levels lead to a 38.5% increase in individuals experiencing shorter waiting times. Reducing the travel distances in London results in a 47% increase in sustainable travel modes.

Can AI answer your money questions? We put chatbots to the test
NEW YORK, April 13 (Reuters) - Face it, we could all use a little help with our money. So who better to ask for personal finance advice than a couple of the most powerful chatbots on the planet? Both OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard are dominating headlines recently, for their generative capabilities and vast storehouses of information. Each has far more processing power than, say, any individual personal finance writer (ahem). What is one great business idea?

Carolina: a General Corpus of Contemporary Brazilian Portuguese with Provenance, Typology and Versioning Information
Crespo, Maria Clara Ramos Morales, Rocha, Maria Lina de Souza Jeannine, Sturzeneker, Mariana Lourenço, Serras, Felipe Ribas, de Mello, Guilherme Lamartine, Costa, Aline Silva, Palma, Mayara Feliciano, Mesquita, Renata Morais, Guets, Raquel de Paula, da Silva, Mariana Marques, Finger, Marcelo, de Sousa, Maria Clara Paixão, Namiuti, Cristiane, Monte, Vanessa Martins do
This paper presents the first publicly available version of the Carolina Corpus and discusses its future directions. Carolina is a large open corpus of Brazilian Portuguese texts under construction using web-as-corpus methodology enhanced with provenance, typology, versioning, and text integrality. The corpus aims at being used both as a reliable source for research in Linguistics and as an important resource for Computer Science research on language models, contributing towards removing Portuguese from the set of low-resource languages. Here we present the construction of the corpus methodology, comparing it with other existing methodologies, as well as the corpus current state: Carolina's first public version has $653,322,577$ tokens, distributed over $7$ broad types. Each text is annotated with several different metadata categories in its header, which we developed using TEI annotation standards. We also present ongoing derivative works and invite NLP researchers to contribute with their own.

N-best Response-based Analysis of Contradiction-awareness in Neural Response Generation Models
Sato, Shiki, Akama, Reina, Ouchi, Hiroki, Tokuhisa, Ryoko, Suzuki, Jun, Inui, Kentaro
Avoiding the generation of responses that contradict the preceding context is a significant challenge in dialogue response generation. One feasible method is post-processing, such as filtering out contradicting responses from a resulting n-best response list. In this scenario, the quality of the n-best list considerably affects the occurrence of contradictions because the final response is chosen from this n-best list. This study quantitatively analyzes the contextual contradiction-awareness of neural response generation models using the consistency of the n-best lists. Particularly, we used polar questions as stimulus inputs for concise and quantitative analyses. Our tests illustrate the contradiction-awareness of recent neural response generation models and methodologies, followed by a discussion of their properties and limitations.
