In this teaser for an upcoming Super Bowl ad, Baldwin gets help planning a Super Bowl party from Marino and the Amazon Echo. SAN FRANCISCO – After 22 years of sitting the game out, Amazon decided to make its first Super Bowl ad about Echo -- a decision that underlined how aggressively Amazon is pushing the personal assistant/wireless speaker to the mass market. The Seattle online retailer launched Echo, a voice-driven, cloud-connected, wireless speaker last June. It ranked as a favorite entry among many tech reviewers in the new and growing Internet of Things market. But while the Echo has "a cult following, it needs more consumer awareness," said Sucharita Mulpuru, Amazon analyst for Forrester Research.

Uber's self-driving truck delivered 50,000 cans of Budweiser

Washington Post - Technology News

If you drank a cold beer in Colorado Springs this weekend, it may have been delivered by a self-driving truck. That's where a big rig tricked out with a sophisticated system that lets a computer take control on the road delivered 50,000 cans of Budweiser last week -- in what the beer company says was the first commercial delivery using the tech. The truck that made the 120-mile journey is one of a handful of Volvo rigs equipped with tech developed by Otto, a start-up Uber acquired in August. Unlike other self-driving systems on the market, such as Tesla's autopilot, Otto's tech lets drivers get out from behind the wheel altogether. At least when it's on the highway and doesn't have to watch out for things like cyclists and pedestrians, that is.

Uber's driverless truck makes its first delivery in Colorado

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A self-driving truck has made its first commercial delivery run in the US, carrying a vital cargo to a depot in the Rockies: thousands of cases of beer. The automated semi took to the open road as part of a partnership between the brewers of Budweiser and ride-hailing firm Uber. It made the 120-mile (190 km) journey from Fort Collins to a depot in Colorado Springs, without a driver behind the wheel - a first for commercial cargo delivery and driverless technology. Otto is aiming to equip trucks with software, sensors, lasers and cameras so they eventually will be able to navigate the more than 220,000 miles of US highways on their own, while a human driver naps in the back of the cab or handles other tasks. For now, the robot truckers would only take control on the highways, leaving humans to handle the tougher task of wending through city streets. The technology fitted in Otto's trucks uses Lidar sensors on top of the cab to read the road ahead, with the data fed back to a computer to analyse the data and make adjustments to speed and steering.

Uber Self-Driving Truck First Cargo Delivery: 50,000 Budweiser Cans

International Business Times

Uber delivered its first cargo shipment driven by a self-driven truck last week, the Verge reported Tuesday. The 18-wheeler Volvo truck traveled 120 miles from an Anheuser-Busch facility in Loveland, Colorado to Colorado Springs, maintaining an average speed of 55 miles. The vehicle was equipped with 2 cameras, 2 front-facing radar sensors, a GPS sensor and light detection and ranging sensors to guide it along the way. "There were people in Colorado Springs this weekend drinking a Budweiser that was delivered by a self-driving truck," said James Sembrot, senior director of logistics strategy at Anheuser-Busch. A human driver drove the truck in city limits but monitored it without intervention for 100 miles of the journey.
