'It's fun to cook up the stupidest idea': the people competing to make the worst computer games possible
Retro video games have never been more popular, mostly because gamers have never been older. The home-computer generation of players are now in their 40s and 50s, and as we get older, we're spending more time down memory lane. Who wouldn't want to replay the classics of their youth on mini versions of the original consoles and computers, or even on a phone? The ZX Spectrum – released in 1982 – had only eight basic colours, a rubber keyboard and 48K of RAM (your 4GB RAM phone has nearly 90,000 times more); nonetheless, some still view it like others view the Beatles. Games such as Manic Miner, Chuckie Egg and Atic Atac were truly original, unlike anything seen before.
Finding the 'Right' Data to Train your AI Is Getting Easier
A recent article in The Register explored the increasing role of humans and how they come into play when training AI. The article, written by Danny Bradbury, noted that there is "an expanding ecosystem of humans in the machine-learning feedback loop who keep the machines on track." Not surprisingly, Alegion was cited as a prime example of this trend. The company possesses a legion of skilled, on-demand workers from around the world, enabling it to consistently deliver quality and scale to its customers. This is important, suggested Bradbury, not only at the outset when the training data is created, but also because humans are pivotal when they provide feedback "back into the training set to help the computer refine its own model."
Meet the menagerie of parasites that can live in human eyes
When Abby Beckley started work on a salmon fishing boat in Alaska, worms were not high on her list of concerns. But it wasn't long before the 26-year-old woman became aware of something irritating her left eye. After several days, she finally went digging with her fingers… and plucked out a tiny worm. "I was just pulling them out, so I knew there were a lot," Beckley recently told National Geographic. Mystified, Beckley's doctors sent a sample of the errant worms to the state health department, who forwarded it to Richard Bradbury, a parasitologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Parasitic Diseases Reference Laboratory, which identifies thousands of parasites every year that are too rare for doctors to recognize.

The ultimate hands-free umbrella: $275 drone can hover above you during storms
President Donald Trump signed a directive in 2017 to establish the'innovation zones' that allow exemptions to some drone regulations, such as flying over people, nighttime flights and flights where the aircraft can't be seen by the operator. States, communities and tribes selected to participate would devise their own trial programs in partnership with government and industry drone users. 'Data gathered from these pilot projects will form the basis of a new regulatory framework to safely integrate drones into our national airspace,' US Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao said in a statement. Ms Chao, who called the rapidly developing drone industry the biggest development since the jet age, said about 150 applications were received. Ten sites have been included in a the Federal Aviation Administration's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program.

Florida wants to battle mosquitoes with drones
Most people might use sprays or swatters to get rid of pesky mosquitoes from their homes. Now, Florida county is set to battle these troublesome pests with teams of low-flying insect-fighting drones. The state even has plans to create one mammoth craft that weighs the same as a grizzly bear (1,500 pounds/ 680kg). As a result of a new US federal programme, authorities will be able to fly drones at night and directly over people at'low altitude', something that would not have been permitted under current law. Details about when or how the unmanned drone will be combating the country's pest problem have yet to be revealed.

'Innovation zone' sites picked for program aimed at expanding drone flights
BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA – U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao on Wednesday announced 10 sites for a test program aimed at increasing the use of unmanned aircraft for projects that range from monitoring crops and oil pipelines in North Dakota to applying mosquito-killing treatments in Florida and package deliveries in Tennessee. President Donald Trump signed a directive last year to establish the "innovation zones" that allow exemptions to some drone regulations, such as flying over people, nighttime flights and flights where the aircraft can't be seen by the operator. States, communities and tribes selected to participate would devise their own trial programs in partnership with government and industry drone users. The Surprising Way Chatbots Are Becoming More Human
Automation is your friend when it comes to having the time to really think, create, pivot and perfect. But when it comes to AI-based chat bots, there's a bit of a dilemma. Customers want personality, naturalness, the sense they're not talking to a machine. And to give them that, you're going to have to think well outside your typical programmer, according to Rurik Bradbury, Global Head of Conversational Strategy at LivePerson. Bradbury explains that, because of customer expectation and demand, businesses have to move away from traditional interfaces and into conversational ones.
Understanding Career Progression in Baseball Through Machine Learning
Bierig, Brian, Hollenbeck, Jonathan, Stroud, Alexander
Abstract-- Professional baseball players are increasingly guaranteed expensive long-term contracts, with over 70 deals signed in excess of $90 million, mostly in the last decade. These are substantial sums compared to a typical franchise valuation of $1-2 billion. Hence, the players to whom a team chooses to give such a contract can have an enormous impact on both competitiveness and profit. Despite this, most published approaches examining career progression in baseball are fairly simplistic. We applied four machine learning algorithms to the problem and soundly improved upon existing approaches, particularly for batting data. I. INTRODUCTION The typical mode of entry for a player into baseball is through the first-year player draft. Players usually enter the draft immediately after high school or college and then spend several years in the drafting team's minor league system. When deemed ready, the drafting team can promote the player to the Major Leagues.

Apple unveils Business Chat, which brings customer service and shopping into iMessage
Apple just unveiled Business Chat, its bid to turn iMessage into a communication platform that can compete with Facebook Messenger – and perhaps, make iMessage one of the main ways you interact with businesses. The company quietly announced the service earlier this week with an update to its developer site, but few details were available at the time. Today was the real introduction, with a session at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference. Business Chat will be part of iOS 11, allowing individuals to open an iMessage window from Safari, Maps, Spotlight, or Siri, and start a conversation with a business. Those conversations will include basic text chats, but Apple is also offering support and structure for more complex interactions, like scheduling an appointment.
Machine Learning: Where It's Been and Where It's Going
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a budding field. Nowadays, many businesses are trying to figure out how to use it to their advantage. Indeed, AI can help reduce operational costs, improve efficiency, generate revenue, and enhance customer experiences. In an article for the Register, Danny Bradbury says that there's a chasm between many current AI deployments and a mature approach with sensible business benefits, and companies need to know how to get from here to there. Because of new computing technologies, machine learning today is more useful and popular than ever.
