If you applied for a mortgage, would you be comfortable with a computer using a collection of data about you to assess how likely you are to default on the loan? If you applied for a job, would you be comfortable with the company's human-resources department running your information through software that will determine how likely it is that you will, say, steal from the company, or leave the job within two years? If you were arrested for a crime, would you be comfortable with the court plugging your personal data into an algorithm-based tool, which will then advise your judge on whether you should await trial in jail or at home? If you were convicted, would you be comfortable with the same tool weighing in on your sentencing? Much of the hand-wringing about advances in artificial intelligence has been concerned with AI's effects on the labor market.

In order to provide coverage of a number of different target window systems it is necessary to develop an abstract UI model which encompasses the essence of those systems. CAP1 provides an abstract set of basic UI elements for interface construction. For one thing, the class syllabus, which was printed on the back of a rumpled flyer promoting bicycle safety, seemed to be preparing you for the fact that some readings may feel toilsome. "Don't worry," it read on the two weeks to be spent with a notoriously long allegorical poem; it's "only drudgery if you're reading it for school." Phew! you thought, then, Wait a second... You might have wondered what you had gotten yourself into. Then again, if you had enrolled in Stephen Booth's class, chances are that you already knew. By this time, Booth had been teaching Shakespeare to Berkeley undergraduates for decades and had earned the adulation of thousands of students.
Google DeepMind NHS data deal was 'legally inappropriate'
Google DeepMind received 1.6 million identifiable personal medical records on an "inappropriate legal basis", according to a letter written by Fiona Caldicott at the UK's National Data Guardian, a government watchdog that monitors patient confidentiality. The letter obtained by Sky News was sent to the medical director of the Royal Free NHS Trust in London on 20 February. The data sharing agreement between the trust and DeepMind was first revealed by a New Scientist investigation last year. Google's AI firm originally obtained the NHS patient records to test a smartphone app called Streams that could help monitor people with kidney disease. A quarter of acute kidney deaths are preventable if caught early, so DeepMind wanted to use its algorithms to try to spot early signs of the disease.

The CP conference is the annual international conference on constraint programming. It is concerned with all aspects of computing with constraints, including theory, algorithms, environments, languages, models, systems, and applications such as decision-making, resource allocation, scheduling, configuration, and planning. The CP community is very keen to ensure it remains open to interdisciplinary research at the intersection between constraint programming and related fields. Hence, in addition to the usual technical and application tracks, the CP 2016 conference featured thematic tracks: Computational Sustainability, CP and Biology, Preferences, Social Choice and Optimization, and Testing and Verification. In this overview, we highlight several remarkable papers that have been selected by the senior program committee and papers with the most innovative methods and techniques, and a very high potential for applications (in our opinion).
