BBA: Bi-Modal Behavioral Alignment for Reasoning with Large Vision-Language Models
Zhao, Xueliang, Huang, Xinting, Fu, Tingchen, Li, Qintong, Gong, Shansan, Liu, Lemao, Bi, Wei, Kong, Lingpeng
Multimodal reasoning stands as a pivotal capability for large vision-language models (LVLMs). The integration with Domain-Specific Languages (DSL), offering precise visual representations, equips these models with the opportunity to execute more accurate reasoning in complex and professional domains. However, the vanilla Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting method faces challenges in effectively leveraging the unique strengths of visual and DSL representations, primarily due to their differing reasoning mechanisms. Additionally, it often falls short in addressing critical steps in multi-step reasoning tasks. To mitigate these challenges, we introduce the \underline{B}i-Modal \underline{B}ehavioral \underline{A}lignment (BBA) prompting method, designed to maximize the potential of DSL in augmenting complex multi-modal reasoning tasks. This method initiates by guiding LVLMs to create separate reasoning chains for visual and DSL representations. Subsequently, it aligns these chains by addressing any inconsistencies, thus achieving a cohesive integration of behaviors from different modalities. Our experiments demonstrate that BBA substantially improves the performance of GPT-4V(ision) on geometry problem solving ($28.34\% \to 34.22\%$), chess positional advantage prediction ($42.08\% \to 46.99\%$) and molecular property prediction ($77.47\% \to 83.52\%$).

AlphaZero Chess: How It Works, What Sets It Apart, and What It Can Tell Us
To those of you who have an interest in chess or who have been monitoring recent developments in artificial intelligence the name "AlphaZero" will be instantly recognisable; its victory over the then-leading chess engine in the world, Stockfish, had revolutionised the way that chess is played by both computers and, indeed, humans. However, if you aren't a chess aficionado or have missed the news a couple of years ago, you might be wondering what exactly this AlphaZero really is, and what makes it worth writing an entire blog post about. For you, I will explain. In short, AlphaZero is a game-playing program that, through a combination of self-play and neural network reinforcement learning (more on that later), is able to learn to play games such as chess and Go from scratch that is, after being fed nothing more than the rules of said games. In fact, a newer derivative of AlphaZero, called MuZero, isn't limited to only board games such as chess, but can also learn to play a range of simple video games from the Atari collection.
Affinity group round-up from NeurIPS 2022
It was a busy month for affinity groups at NeurIPS, with workshops from Black in AI, Queer in AI, LatinX in AI, Indigenous in AI, Global South in AI, Women in ML, and North Africans in ML. These workshops give researchers the opportunity to share their work, find support and make connections, and raise awareness of issues affecting their communities. Here are some of our highlights from the workshops. David Adelani presented his work on transfer languages – taking a model in one language and applying it to other languages. Transferring from one to another language can be tricky, especially when they use different structures or scripts.
