Mining the Benefits of Two-stage and One-stage HOI Detection
Two-stage methods have dominated Human-Object Interaction~(HOI) detection for several years. Recently, one-stage HOI detection methods have become popular. In this paper, we aim to explore the essential pros and cons of two-stage and one-stage methods. With this as the goal, we find that conventional two-stage methods mainly suffer from positioning positive interactive human-object pairs, while one-stage methods are challenging to make an appropriate trade-off on multi-task learning, \emph{i.e.}, object detection, and interaction classification. Therefore, a core problem is how to take the essence and discard the dregs from the conventional two types of methods.
Benefits of Permutation-Equivariance in Auction Mechanisms
Designing an incentive-compatible auction mechanism that maximizes the auctioneer's revenue while minimizes the bidders' ex-post regret is an important yet intricate problem in economics. Remarkable progress has been achieved through learning the optimal auction mechanism by neural networks. In this paper, we consider the popular additive valuation and symmetric valuation setting; i.e., the valuation for a set of items is defined as the sum of all items' valuations in the set, and the valuation distribution is invariant when the bidders and/or the items are permutated. We prove that permutation-equivariant neural networks have significant advantages: the permutation-equivariance decreases the expected ex-post regret, improves the model generalizability, while maintains the expected revenue invariant. This implies that the permutation-equivariance helps approach the theoretically optimal dominant strategy incentive compatible condition, and reduces the required sample complexity for desired generalization. Extensive experiments fully support our theory. To our best knowledge, this is the first work towards understanding the benefits of permutation-equivariance in auction mechanisms.
The Benefits of Implicit Regularization from SGD in Least Squares Problems
Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) exhibits strong algorithmic regularization effects in practice, which has been hypothesized to play an important role in the generalization of modern machine learning approaches. In this work, we seek to understand these issues in the simpler setting of linear regression (including both underparameterized and overparameterized regimes), where our goal is to make sharp instance-based comparisons of the implicit regularization afforded by (unregularized) average SGD with the explicit regularization of ridge regression. For a broad class of least squares problem instances (that are natural in high-dimensional settings), we show: (1) for every problem instance and for every ridge parameter, (unregularized) SGD, when provided with \emph{logarithmically} more samples than that provided to the ridge algorithm, generalizes no worse than the ridge solution (provided SGD uses a tuned constant stepsize); (2) conversely, there exist instances (in this wide problem class) where optimally-tuned ridge regression requires \emph{quadratically} more samples than SGD in order to have the same generalization performance. Taken together, our results show that, up to the logarithmic factors, the generalization performance of SGD is always no worse than that of ridge regression in a wide range of overparameterized problems, and, in fact, could be much better for some problem instances. More generally, our results show how algorithmic regularization has important consequences even in simpler (overparameterized) convex settings.
The Benefits of Being Distributional: Small-Loss Bounds for Reinforcement Learning
While distributional reinforcement learning (DistRL) has been empirically effective, the question of when and why it is better than vanilla, non-distributional RL has remained unanswered.This paper explains the benefits of DistRL through the lens of small-loss bounds, which are instance-dependent bounds that scale with optimal achievable cost.Particularly, our bounds converge much faster than those from non-distributional approaches if the optimal cost is small.As warmup, we propose a distributional contextual bandit (DistCB) algorithm, which we show enjoys small-loss regret bounds and empirically outperforms the state-of-the-art on three real-world tasks.In online RL, we propose a DistRL algorithm that constructs confidence sets using maximum likelihood estimation. We prove that our algorithm enjoys novel small-loss PAC bounds in low-rank MDPs.As part of our analysis, we introduce the $\ell_1$ distributional eluder dimension which may be of independent interest. Then, in offline RL, we show that pessimistic DistRL enjoys small-loss PAC bounds that are novel to the offline setting and are more robust to bad single-policy coverage.

The Benefits of Balance: From Information Projections to Variance Reduction
Data balancing across multiple modalities and sources appears in various forms in foundation models in machine learning and AI, e.g., in CLIP and DINO. We show that data balancing across modalities and sources actually offers an unsuspected benefit: variance reduction. We present a non-asymptotic statistical bound that quantifies this variance reduction effect and relates it to the eigenvalue decay of Markov operators. Furthermore, we describe how various forms of data balancing in contrastive multimodal learning and self-supervised clustering can be better understood, and even improved upon, owing to our variance reduction viewpoint.
Towards Understanding the Benefit of Multitask Representation Learning in Decision Process

Multitask Representation Learning (MRL) has emerged as a prevalent technique to improve sample efficiency in Reinforcement Learning (RL). Empirical studies have found that training agents on multiple tasks simultaneously within online and transfer learning environments can greatly improve efficiency. Despite its popularity, a comprehensive theoretical framework that elucidates its operational efficacy remains incomplete. Prior analyses have predominantly assumed that agents either possess a pre-known representation function or utilize functions from a linear class, where both are impractical. The complexity of real-world applications typically requires the use of sophisticated, non-linear functions such as neural networks as representation function, which are not pre-existing but must be learned. Our work tries to fill the gap by extending the analysis to \textit{unknown non-linear} representations, giving a comprehensive analysis for its mechanism in online and transfer learning setting. We consider the setting that an agent simultaneously playing $M$ contextual bandits (or MDPs), developing a shared representation function $\phi$ from a non-linear function class $\Phi$ using our novel Generalized Functional Upper Confidence Bound algorithm (GFUCB). We formally prove that this approach yields a regret upper bound that outperforms the lower bound associated with learning $M$ separate tasks, marking the first demonstration of MRL's efficacy in a general function class. This framework also explains the contribution of representations to transfer learning when faced with new, yet related tasks, and identifies key conditions for successful transfer. Empirical experiments further corroborate our theoretical findings.

Which Information should the UK and US AISI share with an International Network of AISIs? Opportunities, Risks, and a Tentative Proposal
The UK AI Safety Institute (UK AISI) and its parallel organisation in the United States (US AISI) take up a unique position in the recently established International Network of AISIs. Both are in jurisdictions with frontier AI companies and are assuming leading roles in the international conversation on AI Safety. This paper argues that it is in the interest of both institutions to share specific categories of information with the International Network of AISIs, deliberately abstain from sharing others and carefully evaluate sharing some categories on a case by case basis, according to domestic priorities. The paper further proposes a provisional framework with which policymakers and researchers can distinguish between these three cases, taking into account the potential benefits and risks of sharing specific categories of information, ranging from pre-deployment evaluation results to evaluation standards. In an effort to further improve the research on AI policy relevant information sharing decisions, the paper emphasises the importance of continuously monitoring fluctuating factors influencing sharing decisions and a more in-depth analysis of specific policy relevant information categories and additional factors to consider in future research.

In 2024, both cutting-edge technology and the companies controlling it grew increasingly powerful, provoking euphoric wonderment and existential dread. Companies like Nvidia and Alphabet soared in value, fueled by expectations that artificial intelligence (AI) will become a cornerstone of modern life. While those grand visions are still far into the future, tech undeniably shaped markets, warfare, elections, climate, and daily life this year. Perhaps technology's biggest impact this year was on the global economy. The so-called Magnificent Seven--the stocks of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla--thrived in large part because of the AI boom, propelling the S&P 500 to new highs.
