Characterization and Design of A Hollow Cylindrical Ultrasonic Motor

Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors perform the advantages of compact design, faster reaction time, and simpler setup compared to other motion units such as pneumatic and hydraulic motors, especially its non-ferromagnetic property makes it a perfect match in MRI-compatible robotics systems compared to traditional DC motors. Hollow shaft motors address the advantages of being lightweight and comparable to solid shafts of the same diameter, low rotational inertia, high tolerance to rotational imbalance due to low weight, and tolerance to high temperature due to low specific mass. This article presents a prototype of a hollow cylindrical ultrasonic motor (HCM) to perform direct drive, eliminate mechanical non-linearity, and reduce the size and complexity of the actuator or end effector assembly. Two equivalent HCMs are presented in this work, and under 50g prepressure on the rotor, it performed 383.3333rpm rotation speed and 57.3504mNm torque output when applying 282$V_{pp}$ driving voltage.

Since then, the company has reduced the weight of their outbound packaging by 33%, eliminating 915,000 tons of packaging material worldwide, or the equivalent of over 1.5 billion shipping boxes. With less packaging used throughout the supply chain, volume per shipment is reduced and transportation becomes more efficient. The cumulative impact across Amazon's enormous network is a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions. To make this happen, the customer packaging experience team partnered with AWS to build a machine learning solution powered by Amazon SageMaker.

China, formerly the world's largest buyer of recyclable paper and plastics, no longer imports recycled materials. Global recycling facilities now demand improved sorting practices and reject bales of materials containing greater than one percent impurities. In the face of these realities, some U.S. cities have pulled back from recycling. San Francisco, however, is meeting the challenge head on and continues to lead North America in the recovery of recyclable materials. Recycle Central, the 200,000-square-foot materials recovery facility operated by Recology, is the backbone of San Francisco's recycling system, according to Recology.

A YouTube clip of Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader in conversation with David Letterman on his late night show in 2008 has gone viral for showing Hader doing an impression of Tom Cruise – as his face subtly shifts into Cruise's. The mind-melding video has been viewed nearly 3m times since being uploaded to the YouTube channel Ctrl Shift Face a week ago. Once a year, the bucolic grounds of Goodwood House in West Sussex, England, are consumed by the smell of exhaust fumes, the sound of engines revving, and an excited crowd of 100,000 people, all wanting a look at the special cars on show. They gather here because Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke of Richmond, likes to occasionally open his home to host the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a celebration of all the history, the heritage, and the future of motor racing. This week, among the supercars, hypercars, and pure racing cars, Goodwood visitors will spot a low, black machine streaking in near silence up the winding driveway to the estate, which for the event is transformed into a 1.16-mile hill climb track. "We're pretty sure when the car appears, people will freak out," says Rod Chong, deputy CEO of Roborace. And it will be the first machine to give the hill climb a try without a human in command, so there are some nerves.


Volunteers teach AI to spot slavery sites from satellite images

A new crowdsourcing project aims to identify South Asian brick kilns – frequently the site of forced labour – in satellite images. This data will then be used to train machine learning algorithms to automatically recognise brick kilns in satellite imagery. He's already working on the next stage of the project, which will use a similar approach to help identify open pit mines in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which are also often sites of forced labour. TraffickCam, a project set up by the social action group Exchange Initiative, uses image recognition to identify sex trafficking in hotel rooms.
