Putin's hope for AI to increase information control, end Western tech dependence largely 'aspirational'
A Ukrainian strike destroyed a missile complex in Russian-occupied Crimea on Wednesday, August 23, Ukraine's military intelligence agency said. Russia has focused its efforts on establishing itself as a leader in research, development and fielding of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with hopes to separate Russia from Western dependence – hopes that remain fairly distant based on current capabilities. "Intelligence analysis suggests that the Russian military has thus far not been able to operationalize the concept AI-enabled combat capabilities and shortening the kill chain and making the targeting more effective," Rebekah Koffler, president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting and a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer, told Fox News Digital. "Their efforts remain largely aspirational," she added. "They've got big ideas articulated in military journals, but when it comes to practice, the Russians fall short of their goals."

Experts shoot down Elon Musk's prediction for key AI development: 'It's aspirational'
Experts at a congressional hearing Tuesday on the future of AI downplayed Elon Musk's predictions for how quickly an artificial general intelligence, or AGI, could be developed. The exchange came during a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing featuring a trio of AI experts. Each of the three said developing an AGI would take longer than Musk had predicted. "When Chairman [Mike] Gallagher had a conversation with Elon Musk, he said that AGI was five to six years away. I was surprised by that timeline. What is your sense of how long we are from AGI?" Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., asked.

The Best Trick in 'Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 2'? Double Nostalgia
Skating through a hi-def recreation of the late-1990s shopping mall in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 2 is, uh, strange. Everything is right where you left it 20 years ago: the smash-able glass, the empty storefronts, the bizarre nouveau-art display that for so long seemed like the epitome of consumerist architecture. And despite the fact that the video game franchise has felt beyond dead, it's all here in glorious, remastered detail. Yet none of that is what makes it feel odd. What's peculiar about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 2 is its doubled nostalgia: nostalgia for the time when I obsessed over the original games, for that world, and also for the world itself, the place that existed before Covid-19 quarantines and pandemic isolation.
How different countries view artificial intelligence
The space race of our time is the quest for domination in artificial intelligence. As a result, countries around the world are investing significant resources to build and mature their AI capabilities. They are also crafting strategic national plans about how and where to invest in AI. Taken together, these plans provide a snapshot of the global state of AI investments and how national governments are thinking about how to best utilize their resources. By studying 34 AI strategic plans of more than 1,700 pages, we have found that governments are failing to plan for operational investments, continue to be far more aspirational than practical in their planning, and are failing to consider funding realities.

How Cognitive Computing and AI Drives Disruptive Innovation Analytics Insight
An enterprise's response to existing or emerging products depends upon its approach towards the two terms of machine thinking – artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing. Is your enterprise an early adopter when it comes to leveraging technology to automate enterprise processes, configure chatbots, embed sensors or improve customer experience by drawing insights? Does your company stay on a constant lookout for fresh data sources coming via ever-increasing interactions or does it prefer to observe these changes from the sidelines, not sure of whether to adopt them or not? Three years ago, the C-suite was engaged in a fierce battle to bring disruptive technologies and innovations to the market. But today on an average, the C-suite is less inclined to view competition from outside the industry as a threat and is focusing extensively on searching for innovation externally among partners.
Will Google Become The Next Big Pharma? - Disruption Hub
Since 2000 digital disruption has demolished 52% of the Fortune 500, with tech disrupting many industries such as music, publishing and retail. There are many cases already of established players who failed to ignore customer demands and reacted too slowly. The pressure is on the health sector to catch up and keep up and it is just a matter of time before it impacts the pharmaceutical industry. All three of these factors are present in the pharma world. Nearly $140 billion is spent on pharma R&D each year and yet results in only 30 to 40 new drug approvals.
