Russian troops fight desperate battles for Ukraine's east ahead of winter
Ukrainian troops are locked in a bitter battle for the town of Toretsk in the eastern region of Donetsk, which Russian troops entered last Friday. A spokesperson for Luhansk Technical University said Russian troops were demolishing the town as they advanced. "They erase the city with artillery. We have already seen it in other towns of Donbas. They are trying to find weak points in our defence with such small strikes," Anastasia Bobovnikova said.

Using high-tech drones, Russia is pressing aerial advantage against beleaguered Ukrainian artillery
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski provides his analysis of the Russia-Ukraine war as it marks its third Easter, the passing of the foreign aid package and his expectations for the upcoming NATO summit. Rumbling out of its forest hideout, the hulking German-supplied howitzer has only a few minutes to fire before slipping back under cover to evade Russian surveillance in the skies above. Across the hills and valleys of the east, Ukrainian artillery units play a cat-and-mouse game with Russian drones hunting high-value artillery weapons such as this self-propelled Panzerhaubitze 2000. Moscow's troops have stepped up ground attacks along the 621-mile front in the south and east of Ukraine, threatening some of the industrialized Donetsk region's last big cities held by Kyiv more than two years after Russia's full-scale invasion. Counterbattery efforts are crucial to suppressing enemy fire that rains on Ukrainian lines and artillery units, and paves the way for Russian advances.

'All of Ukraine is a battlefield': Lessons about modern war
The lessons of the Ukraine war are still being debated and assessed. After all, there still is no official winner in this conflict. But the war has clearly accelerated certain military trends, experts have said, indicating how future wars will be fought. Social media is perhaps the greatest innovation in this war. The internet has been replete with videos of Russian armour being destroyed by Ukrainian operatives, an underdog narrative amplified repeatedly by official Ukrainian channels.

What AI Game Developers Do and How to Become One
My name is Aleksandr Pindyk, and I am the Lead Engineer of the AI team at Wargaming studio in Kyiv. For more than five years, our team has been developing AI (artificial intelligence) for one of the most popular online games - World of Tanks. I want to talk more about the profession of an AI developer in game development, the specifics of his work, and how to become one. First, let's define what game AI is. If we move away from the dry definitions from Wikipedia, the game AI is a system that imitates the behavior of a character or player. Depending on the genre and purpose of the game, different technologies and approaches are used in the development of AI. Let's look at the main types of games and the AI goals. Let's take a look at games we all know. A good example here would be chess and Go. This type of game can use artificial intelligence based on neural networks. Since the primary goal of AI is to defeat the player at all costs, it does not need to imitate human behavior.

One village at a time: The grinding artillery war in Ukraine
RUSKA LOZOVA, Ukraine – The Ukrainian major had a few tasks to complete as he made the rounds along his army battalion's front line. One platoon commander needed anti-tank weapons. Another wanted to show off a new line of trenches his forces had dug following a recent Ukrainian advance. But as he drove between positions in his camouflaged armored van near the town of Derhachi, the clock was ticking. A Russian surveillance drone hovered above, watching, sending back coordinates to Russian artillery units, the major said. About 20 minutes later, at least three shells rained down, forcing the major and his team to scramble.

US Ships Artillery To Ukraine To Destroy Russian Firepower
The push by the United States to send artillery to Ukraine aims to degrade Russian forces -- not only on the immediate battlefield but over the longer term, according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and military experts. The United States, France, Czech Republic and other allies are sending scores of the long-range howitzers to help Ukraine blunt Russia's mounting offensive in the eastern Donbas region. Backed by better air defense, attack drones and Western intelligence, the allies hope that Kyiv will be able to destroy a large amount of Russia's firepower in the looming showdown. After returning from Kyiv, where he met Ukraine defense chiefs and President Volodymyr Zelensky, Austin told journalists in Poland early Monday that Washington's hopes are larger than that. Russia "has already lost a lot of military capability, and a lot of its troops, quite frankly. And we want to see them not have the capability to very quickly reproduce that capability," Austin said.

The U.S. races to arm Ukraine with heavier, more advanced weaponry
Brussels – The race is on. As columns of Russian troops began pouring into Ukraine nearly two months ago, the United States and its allies started supplying Kyiv with weapons and equipment for what many expected to be a short war: sniper rifles, helmets, medical kits, encrypted communications, lots of bullets and the portable, shoulder-held Stinger and Javelin missiles that quickly became icons of the conflict. Defying the odds, Ukraine held on to its capital and pushed Russia from the north. Now, as the Kremlin switches gears and begins a concerted effort to capture eastern Ukraine, Washington and its allies are pivoting as well, scrambling to supply Ukraine with bigger and more advanced weapons to defend itself in a grinding war. The West is focused on sending longer-range weapons like howitzers, anti-aircraft systems, anti-ship missiles, armed drones, armored trucks, personnel carriers and even tanks -- the type of arms that President Joe Biden said were tailored to stop "the wider assault we expect Russia to launch in eastern Ukraine."

AI could be game-changer for combat, says acquisition chief
The Army is looking at artificial intelligence to increase lethality, and a senior Army official said the key to A.I. is keeping a proper level of decision-making in the hands of Soldiers. Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Dr. Bruce Jette spoke about artificial intelligence, modernization and acquisition reform Jan. 10 at a Defense Writers Group breakfast. Jette said response times against enemy fire could be a crucial element in determining the outcome of a battle, and A.I. could definitely assist with that. "A.I. is critically important," he said. "You'll hear a theme inside of ASA(ALT), 'time is a weapon.' That's one of the aspects that we're looking at with respect to A.I." Army Under Secretary Ryan McCarthy has been very active in positioning the Army so that it can pick up such critical new technology, Jette said.

West Point Cadets Are Shooting Down Drones With Cyber Rifles
Tall grass hid the advancing cadets from my perch in building 7. The tall grass hid nothing from the drone the defenders flew over their position, a Parrot AR 2.0, a common model used by civilian fliers. A minute later, after the drone pilot filmed the crawling cadets, instructors called in mock artillery fire. The cadets' position was compromised, and while the rest of their platoon advanced to take the buildings, these 10 cadets instead spent an hour in the sun contemplating what they could have done about the drone. The answer was standing right behind them.
