Our mastery of fire freed us from the darkness and helped protect us from predators, in addition to giving us control over our environment. Farming freed us, in large part, from the relentless fear of hunger. Steam power freed us from the narrow constraints of our own physical strength. Computers gave us the ability to process numerical data faster than our brains could ever hope, and so on.
