r/MachineLearning - [R] Newtonian Monte Carlo - Second order methods for faster MCMC convergence

Sorry this is not related to the paper itself, but I'm new in research and I've been wondering how papers with so many authors even come together? Its kind of mind blowing to me how an idea gets worked on by so many people? Would something like this be initiated by the graduate student or the professor or someone else?
