NASA's Apollo 17 was the final mission of the Apollo program, launching on December 7, 1972 with Commander Eugene Cernan, Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt and Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans. Both Cernan and Schmitt walked on the moon, with the latter being the only professional geologist to land on the lunar surface. This mission focused on science, which meant the inclusion of a number of new experiments, including a biological experiment containing five mice carried in the command module.
