Carnegie Mellon named NSF planning institute for artificial intelligence in physics

Carnegie Mellon University has received a $500,000 planning grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to work toward creating a National Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Physics. Today, the NSF announced grants to create 5 full institutes and 10 planning institutes that will focus on advancing foundational artificial intelligence (AI) research, accelerating innovation in scientific fields using AI, building the next generation of talent and bringing together scientists from a wide range of fields for interdisciplinary collaboration. The grants represent the NSF's most significant investment in AI research and workforce development to-date. As a recipient of one of the planning institute grants, Carnegie Mellon will work over the next two years to develop the capacity to become a full institute.
