Google, Harvard, and EdX Team Up to Offer TinyML Training - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

Online learning platform EdX; Google's open-source machine learning platform, TensorFlow; and HarvardX have put together a certification program to train tech professionals to work with tiny machine learning (TinyML). The program is meant to support this specialized segment of development that can include edge computing with smart devices, wildlife tracking, and other sensors. The program comprises a series of courses that can be completed at home. The idea is to scale machine learning to function in small form, edge devices that use far less power than desktop computers and have limited storage and processing capacity, says Anant Agarwal, CEO of EdX, which was founded by MIT and Harvard. That can include devices that operate on batteries, such as remote sensors, microphones, and cameras set up in the wilderness.

Amazon's Machine Learning University To Make Its Online Courses Available To The Public

#artificialintelligence

In a recent development, Amazon announced that it will make online courses by its Machine Learning University available to the public. The classes were previously only available to Amazon employees. The company believes that machine learning has the potential to transform businesses in all industries, but there's a major limitation: demand for individuals with ML expertise far outweighs supply. The Machine Learning University (MLU) was founded with an aim to meet this demand in 2016. It helped ML practitioners sharpen their skills and keep them abreast with the latest developments in the field.

IBM launches three free AI-focused online learning platforms for young people and their teachers

#artificialintelligence

A survey of youth 14-18 finds that they are interested in working with emerging technology, but feel unprepared to do so. As a response, IBM has launched three new AI-focused online tools to teach young people about the future of artificial intelligence. IBM's study of the cohort in 13 countries found that 68% of them think that AI will have a major impact on their lives, but half of that number (34%) said they don't feel properly equipped to use the technology that will make a large difference in their futures. "As a company bringing advanced technologies into the marketplace, we have a deep responsibility to ensure that learners have the skills required to participate in the digital economy," IBM said in its announcement of the new educational tools. More than half, 56%, of young people surveyed said they were interested in tech careers, and 60% of those were interested in emerging tech areas like cybersecurity and the cloud. When it comes to any one area of interest, AI dominates with 59% wanting to learn more about it.

Millions of Americans Have Lost Jobs in the Pandemic -- And Robots and AI Are Replacing Them Faster Than Ever

#artificialintelligence

For 23 years, Larry Collins worked in a booth on the Carquinez Bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area, collecting tolls. The fare changed over time, from a few bucks to $6, but the basics of the job stayed the same: Collins would make change, answer questions, give directions and greet commuters. "Sometimes, you're the first person that people see in the morning," says Collins, "and that human interaction can spark a lot of conversation." But one day in mid-March, as confirmed cases of the coronavirus were skyrocketing, Collins' supervisor called and told him not to come into work the next day. The tollbooths were closing to protect the health of drivers and of toll collectors. Going forward, drivers would pay bridge tolls automatically via FasTrak tags mounted on their windshields or would receive bills sent to the address linked to their license plate. Collins' job was disappearing, as were the jobs of around 185 other toll collectors at bridges in Northern California, all to be replaced by technology.

Left behind: How online learning is hurting students from low-income families

Los Angeles Times

Maria Viego and Cooper Glynn were thriving at their elementary schools. Maria, 10, adored the special certificates she earned volunteering to read to second-graders. Cooper, 9, loved being with his friends and how his teacher incorporated the video game Minecraft into lessons. But when their campuses shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic, their experiences diverged dramatically. Maria is a student in the Coachella Valley Unified School District, where 90% of the children are from low-income families. She didn't have a computer, so she and her mother tried using a cellphone to access her online class, but the connection kept dropping, and they gave up after a week. She did worksheets until June, when she at last received a computer, but struggled to understand the work. Now, as school starts again online, she has told her mother she's frustrated and worried.

AI Helping to Transform Education in Pandemic Era - AI Trends

#artificialintelligence

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education has been profound, with new ways of thinking about how best to teach students reverberating in institutions of higher learning, K-12 classrooms and in the business community. The role of AI is central to the discussion on every level. For the K-12 classroom, teachers are thinking about how to use AI as a teaching tool. For example, Deb Norton of the Oshkosh Area school district in Wisconsin, was asked several years ago by the International Society for Technology in Education to lead a course on the uses of AI in K-12 classrooms, according to a recent account in Education Week. The course includes sections on the definition of artificial intelligence, machine learning, voice recognition, chatbots and the role of data in AI systems.
