Microsoft's mixed reality isn't dead, it's just moving to where businesses will pay for it

PCWorld

Anyone concerned that Microsoft is evolving into a more accessible version of IBM, rather than the consumer company many would like it to be, isn't going to feel any better after the company's Build developer conference starting May 8 in Seattle. Two expected moves will reinforce that enterprise direction: a Kinect sensor for Azure, and two HoloLens apps that are being adapted for businesses using mixed reality. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella is expected to open Build on Monday by describing the "intelligent cloud and the intelligent edge," which has been Microsoft's unofficial mantra for about a year. Microsoft plans to define what it means by intelligent edge: By 2020, there will be about 30 billion connected devices, each generating about 1.5GB of data per day. Smart buildings and connected factories will add to that.

The Need For Drone Data Management Platform โ€“ DEEP AERO DRONES โ€“ Medium

#artificialintelligence

UAVs have become the great source in providing accurate data to the customers. But sooner or later, the demand for drone data management platform may also arise. "Our drone data management and AI Analytics Platform turns unstructured data into answers and delivers that data in useful ways," says Optelos, a drone data management company. A small conversation held with David Tran, Co-founder and CEO of Optelos, covered various aspects related to drone and AI algorithms. AI is being used by a lot of drone companies to streamline the work and reduce the time to deliver insights.

Skylogic Presents A Guide On UAVs Used In AEC Industry

#artificialintelligence

Skylogic presented its new "Quick Start Guide to Drones in Construction" that is extremely designed to help the UAS service providers and business users familiarize with the changes, innovations, growth it would bring to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. The report authored by Colin Snow, founder and CEO of Skylogic, concentrates the Skylogic's insights into the challenges and solutions drones add to a work site. Plus, the report also covers the SWOT analysis for evaluating and designing a drone program. About DEEPAERO DEEP AERO is a global leader in drone technology innovation. Researchers Created Digital Log Tool For Drone Users In Agricultural Field

#artificialintelligence

A researcher from the Purdue University developed the Web-based application that allows unmanned aircraft system operators in agriculture to easily log their flight-related data. The globally available logbook helps record the date, time and location of a flight, model and registration information of the device, the type of sensors used, safety precautions taken and other related information. "We've lacked a system to provide UAS users in agriculture with a way to record information about their flights, sensors and maintenance issues, and creation of a common protocol for UAS operations for various research and production related applications is an effort to plug that gap and bring standardization to flight data collection," says Dharmendra Saraswat, an associate professor in Purdue University. Many people discussed on the innovative ideas to extend time in the air (TITA), ranging from traditional tethered solutions to really innovative, small rotary engines. Since this topic arouse, the performance of the Lithium-ion battery have been improved and on the other hand, TITAs are also supposed to get longer. With the innovations in the UAVs, the battery suppliers are also accelerating their growth. UL created a new standard to help ensure the safety of Li-ion batteries used in UAVs. Alternatives such as hydrogen fuel cells would also work well, but these new and innovative solutions had a bright future.

Criminals used a swarm of drones to surveil and disrupt an FBI hostage operation

#artificialintelligence

Criminals are increasingly using drones in illegal activity and as a way to counter surveil and disrupt the FBI and other law enforcement agents, according to a report by Defense One. The publication cites one instance where an FBI hostage rescue team set up a raised observation post to monitor a situation. A so-called "swarm" of small drones appeared and assailed the FBI in a series of "high-speed low passes at the agents in the observation post to flush them." That incident was shared by Joe Mazel, head of the agency's operational technology law unit at the AUVSI Xponential conference in Denver. Mazel said the FBI agents lost situational awareness.

Collaboration Of DroneBase & DroneDeploy Would Help Expand Businesses

#artificialintelligence

DroneBase and DroneDeploy are collaborating with each other with a mission to expand the businesses using software and data processing while performing drone missions. According to a press release, this unity provides immediate high-resolution aerial data to customers. "The future of drones is automation, but until drones can execute a planned flight without any human supervision, we need a simple solution that helps businesses of any size integrate drones into their workflows," said Mike Winn, CEO of DroneDeploy. Within the DroneDeploy Platform, the'Drone on Demand' app allows users to access the collected data within a 72-hour turnaround time. "Many enterprise customers have seen the value in drone data, but have no idea how to scale that solution out to all of their assets, properties, and worksites in an ROI-positive way," said Dan Burton, CEO of DroneBase.

Drone Pilots To Be Trained At Former Airpark โ€“ DEEP AERO DRONES โ€“ Medium

#artificialintelligence

A former airpark is transformed into a space where drone pilots can go to hone their craft. This step is taken by the Osage Nation. The area turns to be the perfect landscape for a real-life scenario. "The boundaries are limitless for drones." Moreover, the Osage Nation used this opportunity very well and used the land for something productive.

6.9-magnitude earthquake hits Hawaii's Big Island, USGS says, following a recent volcanic eruption

FOX News

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii's big island as the volcano forces thousands to evacuate. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake rattled the Big Island of Hawaii on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, following a recent volcanic eruption. The quake hit roughly 10 miles southwest of Leilani Estates, the USGS reported. It was centered near the south flank of Kilauea volcano, which erupted Thursday and continued to spew lava into Friday. This is in almost exactly the same location at the deadly 1975 M 7.1 earthquake.
