Killer whales – also known as orcas – have complex social structures including close'friendships', a new study reveals. Scientists at the University of Exeter used drones to film the animals – one of the world's most powerful predators – in the Pacific Ocean. The team found killer whales (Orcinus orca) spend more time interacting with certain individuals in their pod, and tend to favour those of the same sex and similar age. Results from the new study are based on 651 minutes of video filmed over 10 days. Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family.

A new study led by the University of Exeter and the Center for Whale Research suggests killer whales may socialise with each other based on age and gender, with younger whales and females more sociable than other groups. The research used drone cameras to study one pod of southern resident killer whales off the US coast of Washington State, in the Pacific Ocean. Around 10 hours of footage was captured over 10 days.

Defense Department demonstrates interceptor that uses 'Silly String' to take down unmanned drones
As drones become a bigger part of modern warfare, fighting forces are devising creative ways to disable them. The U.S. military recently demonstrated a drone interceptor that fires pink'Silly String'-like streamers at unmanned craft, gumming up their rotors and bringing them crashing down to Earth. The goal is to devise anti-drone technology that doesn't cause as much collateral damage as explosives, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and would be used in populated areas. DARPA began developing the interceptor, known as Counter-Unmanned Air System (C-UAS), four years ago as a means to stop small self-guided unmanned aircraft without the kind of major collateral damage caused by gunfire or explosives. In a video posted this week, DARPA demonstrated C-UAS at Eglin Air Force Base outside Valparaiso, Florida.

The US has developed a drone interceptor that fires what appears to be a form of Silly String into their rotors, bringing them down with minimal risk of accidental damage. The interceptor was created by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It is launched from a vehicle and guided by radar that can automatically identify and track small drones. Once the interceptor has a target drone in sight, it releases string-like streamers – their exact composition is unknown – to disable it. The system can also launch multiple interceptors to deal with several incoming drones simultaneously, and the interceptors are reusable. DARPA says it wants to provide drone defences for convoys and other mobile units in heavily populated areas, where normal military weapons would create too much risk of civilian casualties.

The mathematical engineer and robotics PhD student from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, or EPFL, had already built a computer model to simulate the trajectories of five autonomous quadcopters flying through a dense forest without hitting anything. But an errant copter wouldn't survive a tête-à-tête with a physical tree. So Soria built a fake forest the size of a bedroom. Motion-capture cameras lined a rail hanging above the space to track the movement of the quadcopters. And for "trees," Soria settled on a grid of eight green collapsible kids' play tunnels from Ikea, made of a soft fabric.
Mythic launches analog AI processor that consumes 10 times less power
Analog AI processor company Mythic launched its M1076 Analog Matrix Processor today to provide low-power AI processing. The company uses analog circuits rather than digital to create its processor, making it easier to integrate memory into the processor and operate its device with 10 times less power than a typical system-on-chip or graphics processing unit (GPU). The M1076 AMP can support up to 25 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI compute in a 3-watt power envelope. It is targeted at AI at the edge applications, but the company said it can scale from the edge to server applications, addressing multiple vertical markets including smart cities, industrial applications, enterprise applications, and consumer devices. To address a wider range of designs, the M1076 AMP comes in several form factors: a standalone processor, an ultra-compact PCIe M.2 card, and a PCIe card with up to 16 AMPs.
