Inspection planning under execution uncertainty

Autonomous inspection tasks necessitate effective path-planning mechanisms to efficiently gather observations from points of interest (POI). However, localization errors commonly encountered in urban environments can introduce execution uncertainty, posing challenges to the successful completion of such tasks. To tackle these challenges, we present IRIS-under uncertainty (IRIS-U^2), an extension of the incremental random inspection-roadmap search (IRIS) algorithm, that addresses the offline planning problem via an A*-based approach, where the planning process occurs prior the online execution. The key insight behind IRIS-U^2 is transforming the computed localization uncertainty, obtained through Monte Carlo (MC) sampling, into a POI probability. IRIS-U^2 offers insights into the expected performance of the execution task by providing confidence intervals (CI) for the expected coverage, expected path length, and collision probability, which becomes progressively tighter as the number of MC samples increase. The efficacy of IRIS-U^2 is demonstrated through a case study focusing on structural inspections of bridges. Our approach exhibits improved expected coverage, reduced collision probability, and yields increasingly-precise CIs as the number of MC samples grows. Furthermore, we emphasize the potential advantages of computing bounded sub-optimal solutions to reduce computation time while still maintaining the same CI boundaries.


MARC: Multipolicy and Risk-aware Contingency Planning for Autonomous Driving

Generating safe and non-conservative behaviors in dense, dynamic environments remains challenging for automated vehicles due to the stochastic nature of traffic participants' behaviors and their implicit interaction with the ego vehicle. This paper presents a novel planning framework, Multipolicy And Risk-aware Contingency planning (MARC), that systematically addresses these challenges by enhancing the multipolicy-based pipelines from both behavior and motion planning aspects. Specifically, MARC realizes a critical scenario set that reflects multiple possible futures conditioned on each semantic-level ego policy. Then, the generated policy-conditioned scenarios are further formulated into a tree-structured representation with a dynamic branchpoint based on the scene-level divergence. Moreover, to generate diverse driving maneuvers, we introduce risk-aware contingency planning, a bi-level optimization algorithm that simultaneously considers multiple future scenarios and user-defined risk tolerance levels. Owing to the more unified combination of behavior and motion planning layers, our framework achieves efficient decision-making and human-like driving maneuvers. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate superior performance to other strong baselines in various environments.


osmAG: Hierarchical Semantic Topometric Area Graph Maps in the OSM Format for Mobile Robotics

Maps are essential to mobile robotics tasks like localization and planning. We propose the open street map (osm) XML based Area Graph file format to store hierarchical, topometric semantic multi-floor maps of indoor and outdoor environments, since currently no such format is popular within the robotics community. Building on-top of osm we leverage the available open source editing tools and libraries of osm, while adding the needed mobile robotics aspect with building-level obstacle representation yet very compact, topometric data that facilitates planning algorithms. Through the use of common osm keys as well as custom ones we leverage the power of semantic annotation to enable various applications. For example, we support planning based on robot capabilities, to take the locomotion mode and attributes in conjunction with the environment information into account. The provided C++ library is integrated into ROS. We evaluate the performance of osmAG using real data in a global path planning application on a very big osmAG map, demonstrating its convenience and effectiveness for mobile robots.


A Tutorial on Distributed Optimization for Cooperative Robotics: from Setups and Algorithms to Toolboxes and Research Directions

Several interesting problems in multi-robot systems can be cast in the framework of distributed optimization. Examples include multi-robot task allocation, vehicle routing, target protection and surveillance. While the theoretical analysis of distributed optimization algorithms has received significant attention, its application to cooperative robotics has not been investigated in detail. In this paper, we show how notable scenarios in cooperative robotics can be addressed by suitable distributed optimization setups. Specifically, after a brief introduction on the widely investigated consensus optimization (most suited for data analytics) and on the partition-based setup (matching the graph structure in the optimization), we focus on two distributed settings modeling several scenarios in cooperative robotics, i.e., the so-called constraint-coupled and aggregative optimization frameworks. For each one, we consider use-case applications, and we discuss tailored distributed algorithms with their convergence properties. Then, we revise state-of-the-art toolboxes allowing for the implementation of distributed schemes on real networks of robots without central coordinators. For each use case, we discuss their implementation in these toolboxes and provide simulations and real experiments on networks of heterogeneous robots.


An Informative Path Planning Framework for Active Learning in UAV-based Semantic Mapping

Abstract--Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are frequently used for aerial mapping and general monitoring tasks. Recent progress in deep learning enabled automated semantic segmentation of imagery to facilitate the interpretation of large-scale complex environments. Commonly used supervised deep learning for segmentation relies on large amounts of pixel-wise labelled data, which is tedious and costly to annotate. The domain-specific visual appearance of aerial environments often prevents the usage of models pre-trained on publicly available datasets. To address this, we propose a novel general planning framework for UAVs to autonomously acquire informative training images for model re-training. Our framework combines the mapped acquisition function information into the UAV's planning objectives. In this way, the UAV adaptively acquires informative aerial images to be manually labelled for model re-training. Experimental results on real-world data and in a photorealistic simulation show that our framework maximises model performance and drastically reduces labelling efforts. Our map-based planners outperform state-of-the-art local planning. Our map-based planners replan a UAV's path (orange, bottom-left) to collect the most informative, e.g. Combined with advances in deep learning for semantic segmentation through fully convolutional improve the robot's vision capabilities in initially unknown neural networks (FCNs) [9, 10], deploying UAVs accelerates environments while minimising the total amount of humanlabelled automated scene understanding in large-scale and complex data. To this end, our approach exploits ideas from aerial environments [11]. Classical deep learning-based semantic AL research and incorporates them into a new informative segmentation models often used in this context are path planning (IPP) framework.


De facto ban lifted on building onshore windfarms in England

Michael Gove has loosened restrictions on building onshore windfarms in England, meaning developments will no longer be quashed by one objection, but campaigners have said such schemes are still at a disadvantage. The communities secretary announced on Tuesday that the government would make a series of changes to the planning system in order to lift a de facto ban on the structures that has been in place since 2015. The move comes after a long campaign by Conservative MPs to overturn the 2015 rules, which have allowed local authorities to block new turbines based on just one complaint. Those rules have led to just 20 new onshore turbines being given planning permission in the last nine years. Gove said: "To increase our energy security and develop a cleaner, greener economy, we are introducing new measures to allow local communities to back onshore wind power projects. This will only apply in areas where developments have community support, but these changes will help build on Britain's enormous success as a global leader in offshore wind, helping us on our journey to net zero."


Learning Efficient Abstract Planning Models that Choose What to Predict

Abstract: An effective approach to solving long-horizon tasks in robotics domains with continuous state and action spaces is bilevel planning, wherein a highlevel search over an abstraction of an environment is used to guide low-level decision-making. Recent work has shown how to enable such bilevel planning by learning abstract models in the form of symbolic operators and neural samplers. In this work, we show that existing symbolic operator learning approaches fall short in many robotics domains where a robot's actions tend to cause a large number of irrelevant changes in the abstract state. This is primarily because they attempt to learn operators that exactly predict all observed changes in the abstract state. To overcome this issue, we propose to learn operators that'choose what to predict' by only modelling changes necessary for abstract planning to achieve specified goals. Experimentally, we show that our approach learns operators that lead to efficient planning across 10 different hybrid robotics domains, including 4 from the challenging BEHAVIOR-100 benchmark, while generalizing to novel initial states, goals, and objects.


An Iterative Approach for Collision Feee Routing and Scheduling in Multirobot Stations

This work is inspired by the problem of planning sequences of operations, as welding, in car manufacturing stations where multiple industrial robots cooperate. The goal is to minimize the station cycle time, \emph{i.e.} the time it takes for the last robot to finish its cycle. This is done by dispatching the tasks among the robots, and by routing and scheduling the robots in a collision-free way, such that they perform all predefined tasks. We propose an iterative and decoupled approach in order to cope with the high complexity of the problem. First, collisions among robots are neglected, leading to a min-max Multiple Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (MGTSP). Then, when the sets of robot loads have been obtained and fixed, we sequence and schedule their tasks, with the aim to avoid conflicts. The first problem (min-max MGTSP) is solved by an exact branch and bound method, where different lower bounds are presented by combining the solutions of a min-max set partitioning problem and of a Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP). The second problem is approached by assuming that robots move synchronously: a novel transformation of this synchronous problem into a GTSP is presented. Eventually, in order to provide complete robot solutions, we include path planning functionalities, allowing the robots to avoid collisions with the static environment and among themselves. These steps are iterated until a satisfying solution is obtained. Experimental results are shown for both problems and for their combination. We even show the results of the iterative method, applied to an industrial test case adapted from a stud welding station in a car manufacturing line.


Language-Conditioned Path Planning

Contact is at the core of robotic manipulation. At times, it is desired (e.g. manipulation and grasping), and at times, it is harmful (e.g. when avoiding obstacles). However, traditional path planning algorithms focus solely on collision-free paths, limiting their applicability in contact-rich tasks. To address this limitation, we propose the domain of Language-Conditioned Path Planning, where contact-awareness is incorporated into the path planning problem. As a first step in this domain, we propose Language-Conditioned Collision Functions (LACO) a novel approach that learns a collision function using only a single-view image, language prompt, and robot configuration. LACO predicts collisions between the robot and the environment, enabling flexible, conditional path planning without the need for manual object annotations, point cloud data, or ground-truth object meshes. In both simulation and the real world, we demonstrate that LACO can facilitate complex, nuanced path plans that allow for interaction with objects that are safe to collide, rather than prohibiting any collision.


Graph-based SLAM-Aware Exploration with Prior Topo-Metric Information

Autonomous exploration requires the robot to explore an unknown environment while constructing an accurate map with the SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) techniques. Without prior information, the exploratory performance is usually conservative due to the limited planning horizon. This paper exploits a prior topo-metric graph of the environment to benefit both the exploration efficiency and the pose graph accuracy in SLAM. Based on recent advancements in relating pose graph reliability with graph topology, we are able to formulate both objectives into a SLAM-aware path planning problem over the prior graph, which finds a fast exploration path with informative loop closures that globally stabilize the pose graph. Furthermore, we derive theoretical thresholds to speed up the greedy algorithm to the problem, which significantly prune non-optimal loop closures in iterations. The proposed planner is incorporated into a hierarchical exploration framework, with flexible features including path replanning and online prior map update that adds additional information to the prior graph. Extensive experiments indicate that our method has comparable exploration efficiency to others while consistently maintaining higher mapping accuracy in various environments.
