Vegas, Baby! A Distance-based Recommender System with the Yelp Dataset
The lights, the sounds, the joyful lap-dancing abound. Or so I've heard (I haven't actually been there). As they say, whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas; we all know what happens in Vegas, but perhaps culinary experiences do not top that list. For the 5th project in Metis' Data Science Bootcamp, I decided to have a go at using Yelp's Kaggle Dataset to build a distance-based recommender system. In this project, I hypothesize food being an afterthought, that people are indecisive, constantly hangry and want to be told what restaurants are good within their immediate proximity while still taking into account personal preferences and visit histories.
Conceptualize and Infer User Needs in E-commerce
Luo, Xusheng, Yang, Yonghua, Zhu, Kenny Q., Gong, Yu, Yang, Keping
Understanding latent user needs beneath shopping behaviors is critical to e-commercial applications. Without a proper definition of user needs in e-commerce, most industry solutions are not driven directly by user needs at current stage, which prevents them from further improving user satisfaction. Representing implicit user needs explicitly as nodes like "outdoor barbecue" or "keep warm for kids" in a knowledge graph, provides new imagination for various e- commerce applications. Backed by such an e-commerce knowledge graph, we propose a supervised learning algorithm to conceptualize user needs from their transaction history as "concept" nodes in the graph and infer those concepts for each user through a deep attentive model. Offline experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and stability of our model, and online industry strength tests show substantial advantages of such user needs understanding.
Why you should always be polite when talking to Amazon's Alexa
Amazon's Alexa has become a staple in British homes, where families depend on her thankless work playing music, predicting the weather and reciting recipes on demand. But now a top neuropsychologist has warned that parents should start to treat the voice assistant with a little more respect by getting into the habit of saying "please" and "thank you" when making commands, to avoid raising a badly behaved child. Dr Laura Phillips, of the Child Mind Institute, said: "There is a broader movement toward communicating through and with machines rather than people, which is a different style of communication. "It could be dangerous if we do not make sure that children are developing the social use...

Google rolls out new privacy tools for Maps, YouTube and Assistant – TechCrunch
Google today announced a handful of new consumer privacy tools for some of its most-used products, including Google Maps, YouTube and Google Assistant. The tools are meant to better allow users to control, manage and erase the data Google collects from those who use its services or prevent Google from collecting that data in the first place, in some cases. In Google Maps, there's now an incognito mode option that works similar to the one available in the Chrome browser and, more recently, YouTube . The idea is that there are times when you don't want Google to track your usage of Maps, including when you search for particular places or travel about town. There are a number of reasons why you might want to opt-out of being tracked in Maps -- maybe you don't want to taint your personalized recommendations with irrelevant data.
A.I. and You
Hollywood has primed most of us to instinctively think of artificial intelligence in terms of robots taking over entire industries -- if not the world. In reality, of course, versions of AI have increasingly percolated into more mundane uses. Most chatbots today are AI-powered, for instance.
