Google Nest Audio review: A steal at $100

Engadget

In a lot of ways, smart speakers are the ideal home stereo for the streaming music generation. Telling an Amazon Echo to play whatever song was on your mind for the first time was a bit of a revelation. And music remains one of the most-used and most crucial features of any smart speaker. The only problem is lots of them sound terrible. Sonos, Google, Apple and Amazon all have smart speakers where music quality is paramount, but a $200 Echo Studio or Sonos one is a tough sell next to a $50 Echo Dot or Nest Mini.

Google Assistant App Actions brings voice commands to Android apps

PCWorld

Google Assistant can do a lot of things on our phones, but it's not so great at interacting with our Android apps. Sure you can ask Spotify to play a song or send a text with Telegram, but for the most part, apps and Assistant are mutually exclusive. As part of its Google Assistant Developer Day Thursday, Google has announced that a handful of "your favorite Android apps" have begun working with Assistant voice commands, including Discord, Etsy, MyFitnessPal, Mint, Nike Adapt, Postmates, Snapchat, Spotify, Twitter, and Walmart. As long as the corresponding app is set up on your phone, all you need to do is summon Assistant and ask to do something within an app, like ordering pizza on Postmates or checking an order status on Walmart. Google is calling the new feature App Actions, and they're similar to Alexa Actions.

Google has added more natural-sounding voices to Assistant

Engadget

Google is adding two more English-speaking voices to Assistant. It used an updated prosody model to make them sound more natural than other Assistant voices. Developers can now start using them in their existing Actions. Here's a quick example of one of them sounds: Meanwhile, in early 2021, Google will roll out CVC entry as a payment authorization option on smart displays. You'll be able to confirm payments by punching in the verification code printed on the back of your credit card.

Google Assistant makes big push to integrate Android apps - 9to5Google

#artificialintelligence

Google Assistant is available on a slew of platforms from cars to TVs and wearables. However, the place where it has really taken off is inside the home on Smart Displays and speakers to control household fixtures. Google now wants to bring Assistant's ubiquity to Android apps. The big focus of Google Assistant Developer Day is on controlling apps on Android via voice. Many of the third-party interactions you have with Assistant today are to command smart home devices, like lights and security cameras.

Google Assistant finally works with some third-party apps

Engadget

Before today, if you ask Siri or the Google Assistant to "check the news on Twitter," you'll either be shown the @CHEK_News account on the Twitter website or articles about the social network on Apple News. For Android users, voice commands are about to get a lot smarter. Google just announced that the Assistant will be able to search and control your third-party apps when you ask it to. So when you ask for the news on Twitter, you'll see the latest trending tweets instead of a random account. Google said Assistant will work with the top 30 apps on the Play Store, with support for more coming soon.

You can do more with your voice: Say, 'Hey Google' on Android to command third-party apps

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Say, "Hey Google" to your Android phone, and you'll be able to do more with your apps. Previously, Google's voice-enable Assistant could open apps. Now, your voice can direct Google to have apps perform many tasks: read news from Twitter, log calories on MyFitnessPal, play a playlist on Spotify or inquire about when your Walmart order will be arriving. Fine print galore: You'll need to update your Google search app to get the Assistant to respond to you, and it works only on Google's Android mobile operating system, not Apple iOS. Apple introduced similar features to have its Siri personal assistant open and control apps via the "Shortcuts" app in 2018.

Google Assistant's Guest mode for Nest speakers will let you go incognito

PCWorld

It's already pretty easy to ask Google Assistant to forget what you just said, or to forget all your conversations for the day. Soon, though, there will be an easy way to keep the Assistant from remembering what you said in the first place. Google just announced that Guest mode is coming to Nest speakers and other Google Assistant-enabled devices in the "coming weeks." You'll be able to activate Guest mode by giving the Assistant a voice command (Google didn't reveal what the exact command is yet), and while Guest mode is on, Google Assistant won't remember anything you say. A second command will disable Guest mode, at which point the Assistant will resume saving your interactions with it.
