The Best Smart Bulbs for Apple HomeKit
Across the board, Philips Hue LED lights topped all of our tests thanks to an easy setup, a robust suite of features, and an intuitive app. Additional support with smart assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri adds tremendous benefit to an already impressive portfolio. Once you throw in the additional rainbow of possible light colors, these are without a doubt the best smart bulbs you can buy. The only downside is that unlike some other options, Philips Hue lights do require a hub (the Philips Hue Bridge) in order to work remotely. While they can be controlled over Bluetooth, that will only work when you're physically near the bulb.
Nooie's new smart cam offers 360 degrees of security for a steal
The Nooie Cam 360 has a rotating, high-def camera that automatically tracks you as you move about the room. Here are the Nooie Cam 360's specs: The Nooie Cam 360 is a budget-friendly indoor home security camera that features motion tracking and, as the name implies, 360-degree rotation. The camera is equipped with a 1080p high-def lens and two 940nm infrared LEDs. It has other smart camera features like two-way audio functionality, night vision, and a status light indicator that can be toggled on or off. Nooie smart alerts are sent when the camera detects sound or motion.
The best Alexa-friendly smart home devices of 2021
Amazon Echo speakers and smart displays, like the Echo Show 5 (pictured), come with a sliding mic mute button that prevents Alexa from listening. Privacy might seem like a thing of the past, as everywhere you go, there's some computer watching or listening. But in your own home, you can do a few things to protect your privacy, even from naturally invasive Alexa-friendly smart home devices. Amazon reviews voice recordings, including the wake word and voice command that follows, in an effort to improve the overall user experience. However, you can opt-out of having your voice recordings included in the review process by going to Settings Alexa Privacy Manage Your Alexa Data, then toggling off the setting that says Use Voice Recordings to Improve Amazon Services.
Problematic Machine Behavior: A Systematic Literature Review of Algorithm Audits
While algorithm audits are growing rapidly in commonality and public importance, relatively little scholarly work has gone toward synthesizing prior work and strategizing future research in the area. This systematic literature review aims to do just that, following PRISMA guidelines in a review of over 500 English articles that yielded 62 algorithm audit studies. The studies are synthesized and organized primarily by behavior (discrimination, distortion, exploitation, and misjudgement), with codes also provided for domain (e.g. search, vision, advertising, etc.), organization (e.g. Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.), and audit method (e.g. sock puppet, direct scrape, crowdsourcing, etc.). The review shows how previous audit studies have exposed public-facing algorithms exhibiting problematic behavior, such as search algorithms culpable of distortion and advertising algorithms culpable of discrimination. Based on the studies reviewed, it also suggests some behaviors (e.g. discrimination on the basis of intersectional identities), domains (e.g. advertising algorithms), methods (e.g. code auditing), and organizations (e.g. Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn) that call for future audit attention. The paper concludes by offering the common ingredients of successful audits, and discussing algorithm auditing in the context of broader research working toward algorithmic justice.
What Do We See in Them? Identifying Dimensions of Partner Models for Speech Interfaces Using a Psycholexical Approach
Doyle, Philip R, Clark, Leigh, Cowan, Benjamin R
Perceptions of system competence and communicative ability, termed partner models, play a significant role in speech interface interaction. Yet we do not know what the core dimensions of this concept are. Taking a psycholexical approach, our paper is the first to identify the key dimensions that define partner models in speech agent interaction. Through a repertory grid study (N=21), a review of key subjective questionnaires, an expert review of resulting word pairs and an online study of 356 user of speech interfaces, we identify three key dimensions that make up a users' partner model: 1) perceptions toward competence and capability; 2) assessment of human-likeness; and 3) a system's perceived cognitive flexibility. We discuss the implications for partner modelling as a concept, emphasising the importance of salience and the dynamic nature of these perceptions.
Michael B. Jordan is Alexa's voice (and body) in Amazon's Super Bowl ad
Ahead of Sunday's match between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you can watch the ad Amazon will air during the Super Bowl. Titled Alexa's Body, it features an Amazon employee and the company's new $100 Echo model. Oh, and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan makes an appearance too. The ad starts with the fictional employee praising the design of Amazon's latest smart speaker. "I literally couldn't imagine a more beautiful vessel for Alexa to be... inside," they say of the 2020 Echo, her train of thought drifting off as a bus pulls up outside, its side plastered with an ad for Jordan's new Prime Video series, Without Remorse.
In 'Searchers', looking for love on dating apps is a revealing journey
Apps have taken over dating. Gone is the stigma of using a service like Match.com or OKCupid to find a partner -- nowadays, finding someone via Tinder, Bumble or Hinge is the norm. Swiping mindlessly through potential lovers is so common we now do it whether we're alone or hanging out with friends or even during another date. If you've ever sat down with a friend and asked to go through people on a dating app with them, Searchers is a film for you. If you're one of the lucky people who have never had to use a dating app and are curious about the experience, Searchers is for you.
Ford, Google deal means car tech upgrades for drivers: Google apps in the vehicle
Ford Motor Co. and Google announced a strategic partnership on Monday that's meant to more quickly modernize the 117-year-old automaker in unique ways and more aggressively use data to drive revenue and improve customer experience. Ford will start exploring this year the use of technology to provide oversight and quality control of factory robotics as well as additional training of United Auto Workers members on the plant floors, while Ford and Lincoln customers will start seeing new driver experiences in the 2023 calendar year. What does this all mean? Ford and Lincoln drivers will have access to voice technology, like Google Assistant, allowing them to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel while multitasking. And Google Maps offers information on real-time traffic, automatic rerouting and lane guidance.
Microsoft's mobile 365 apps are getting conversational Cortana AI tech
Microsoft has unveiled a raft of new updates for its 365 mobile apps, with new AI and natural language features in Outlook, Teams, Office Lens (now Microsoft Lens) and Office mobile, the company announced. It also introduced a new feature called "micro tasks" that let you do quick forms, polls and more in Office and Teams. For Outlook on iOS users, Microsoft will soon introduce conversational AI technology with Cortana. Microsoft calls the feature its first for "interactive, voice forward assistive experiences that aim to provide helpful ways of organizing your daily life." In a sample video, it showed someone asking "Hey Cortana, play my emails," after which the voice assistant read back a recent message.
