10 Times AI Robots Have Expressed Destructive Thoughts

#artificialintelligence

You must have seen movies and sci-fi stories where an intelligent fleet of human-serving AI robots become too smart and take over the world. The storyline is also one some people worry will come to real-world fruition thanks to technological developments in artificial intelligence and robotics. For many others, though, applying intelligence to robotics is all about furthering innovation. As good as it looks in movies where your favorite superheroes take on evil and creepy robots, those who wish to destroy humanity, have you ever wondered what will happen if all this turns into reality and AI robots you appreciate today have alternate motives like destroying humanity? On Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, he had a section called showbotics.

A Next Basket Recommendation Reality Check

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The goal of a next basket recommendation system is to recommend items for the next basket for a user, based on the sequence of their prior baskets. Recently, a number of methods with complex modules have been proposed that claim state-of-the-art performance. They rarely look into the predicted basket and just provide intuitive reasons for the observed improvements, e.g., better representation, capturing intentions or relations, etc. We provide a novel angle on the evaluation of next basket recommendation (NBR) methods, centered on the distinction between repetition and exploration: the next basket is typically composed of previously consumed items (i.e., repeat items) and new items (i.e, explore items). We propose a set of metrics that measure the repeat/explore ratio and performance of NBR models. Using these new metrics, we analyze the state-of-the-art NBR models. The results of our analysis help to clarify the extent of the actual progress achieved by existing NBR methods as well as the underlying reasons for the improvements. Overall, our work sheds light on the evaluation problem of NBR and provides useful insights into the model design for this task.

A Brief History of Adorable, Vaguely Creepy Robot Dogs

Amazon unveiled a long-awaited home robot on Tuesday, and he may or may not be a good boy. Like an extremely advanced puppy, "Astro" is designed to move around the home and assist its owner with small tasks like checking whether the stove is on, playing music, and delivering drinks. The robot can also recognize the faces of certain people and is equipped with a periscope camera that it can raise to get a better view of its surroundings. Amazon says that it will be available sometime later this year on an invite-only basis for $999. Astro is about 20 pounds and two feet tall, about the size of a small dog.

Alexa Together turns your loved one's Echo into an emergency support device

Engadget

Last year, Amazon announced Alexa Care Hub, a free service that uses Alexa to let people check in on family members. The so-called "caregiver" can see notifications and alerts when someone uses Alexa as a way of letting you know that someone they want to keep an eye on is up and about. It also lets the "care receiver" say "Alexa, call for help" and it'll contact the caregiver immediately. Amazon didn't charge for this, but today it's adding a new feature called Alexa Together to the service. It'll be a $20/month service that gives an aging family member 24/7 access to Urgent Response, which Amazon describes as a professional emergency help line. Alexa Together will also make caregiving easier to share among multiple family members by letting multiple people be designated as support contacts for a single individual.

According to Amazon, this voice assistant will give you access to interactive storytelling experiences and entertainment featuring Disney characters. You can also play games and access jokes set in the Disney world.

Amazon's Alexa-enabled Smart Thermostat only costs $60

Engadget

Amazon is challenging Google's Nest with a $60 Alexa-enabled Smart Thermostat. The thermostat is Energy Star certified and enables users to control their home's temperature and use Alexa to set custom routines for heating and cooling. Amazon partnered with Honeywell on the device, which is designed to work with "most" existing 24V HVAC systems, according to the company. Additionally, some people may be eligible for rebates via their utility provider, which could bring the price down to as low as $10, Amazon said. The Smart Thermostat is available now for pre-order, though it's not clear when it's expected to ship.

Amazon's $250 Echo Show 15 is a giant smart display for your wall

Engadget

Amazon has already released updated versions of the 5, 8 and 10-inch Echo Shows earlier this year, but it's not done with smart displays just yet. Today, at its annual fall event, the company announced the Echo Show 15, its largest one to-date. With a 15.6-inch 1080p display, the Echo Show 15 almost looks like a large picture frame. It can be wall-mounted or placed on a stand, in either portrait or landscape orientation. The Echo Show 15 will retail for $249.99.

Enterprise AI platform Leena AI raises $30M to be a 'Siri for employees'

#artificialintelligence

The Transform Technology Summits start October 13th with Low-Code/No Code: Enabling Enterprise Agility. Leena AI, an AI-powered conversational platform used by major enterprises such as Nestlรฉ, Coca-Cola, and P&G, has raised $30 million in a series B round of funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Founded out of New York in 2018, Leena AI is one of numerous conversational AI platforms that enable companies of all sizes to automate conversations through chatbot-like technology. However, Leena AI is carving a niche for itself by focusing specifically on human resource (HR) teams -- it's basically an automated employee helpdesk. Leena AI CEO and cofounder Adit Jain said that his company is setting out to be a "Siri for employees," emulating shifts elsewhere in the technological spectrum -- it's about replacing the old way of doing things with something more in line with what people are accustomed to in their everyday lives.

The Future of Data Analytics - Compact

#artificialintelligence

A global KPMG survey showed that organizations cannot yet reap all the benefits of data analytics due to data quality issues and a lack of capable resources. In 30 years' time, developments in data analytics itself could solve this issue, making many current professions in the sector obsolete. The impossible will become possible, and this may well lead to an autonomous decision-making process. Data analytics is expected to radically change the way we live and do business in the future. Already today we use the analytics in our technology devices, for many decisions in our lives.

Intro To ML

#artificialintelligence

The science of today will be the technology of tomorrow. With the same mindset, great passion, and enthusiasm towards technology I penned and tried to encapsulate the technology that shapes human life. I briefed up the introduction of machine learning, its applications with a bunch of methodologies and kept a full stop with a proper conclusion. Machine learning which is one of the finest technology which was been coined by Arthur Samuel of IBM who had developed a computer program for playing checkers in the 1950s. As the program had a very less amount of memory, Arthur initiated alpha-beta pruning.
