A bunch of Amazon Echo devices are already on sale for Black Friday

Engadget

Black Friday for Echo and Fire TV devices has already started -- Amazon knocked down the prices of many of its Echo gadgets today. Most of the sale prices are the same as we saw during Amazon Prime Day in June, or even better. Discounts of note are the Echo for $60 and the second-generation Echo Show 5 for $45. While the latest Echo Show 8 isn't on sale yet, the first-gen device bundled with a Blink Mini security camera is $80 off as well, bringing it down to $65. You probably already know the deal with Echo devices, but we'll recap here.

Towards Return Parity in Markov Decision Processes

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Algorithmic decisions made by machine learning models in high-stakes domains may have lasting impacts over time. Unfortunately, naive applications of standard fairness criterion in static settings over temporal domains may lead to delayed and adverse effects. To understand the dynamics of performance disparity, we study a fairness problem in Markov decision processes (MDPs). Specifically, we propose return parity, a fairness notion that requires MDPs from different demographic groups that share the same state and action spaces to achieve approximately the same expected time-discounted rewards. We first provide a decomposition theorem for return disparity, which decomposes the return disparity of any two MDPs into the distance between group-wise reward functions, the discrepancy of group policies, and the discrepancy between state visitation distributions induced by the group policies. Motivated by our decomposition theorem, we propose algorithms to mitigate return disparity via learning a shared group policy with state visitation distributional alignment using integral probability metrics. We conduct experiments to corroborate our results, showing that the proposed algorithm can successfully close the disparity gap while maintaining the performance of policies on two real-world recommender system benchmark datasets.

Match Introduces a Human Matchmaking Element to Its Dating App

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

They will be guided by members' answers to four questions on, for instance, what a person would change about their dating life, what sort of person a user gravitates toward, and others. The company created the feature because, for some singles, the pandemic has added a degree of urgency to finding a long-term relationship, said Amarnath Thombre, chief executive of Match Group Americas. "People have had enough time to reflect on what really matters to me, what makes me happy," Mr. Thombre said. "They're also being a little more clear on who they want to be." Get weekly insights into the ways companies optimize data, technology and design to drive success with their customers and employees. The experts can narrow down the candidate pool, bringing forward people who might be more compatible, said Rachel DeAlto, chief dating expert at Match.

Learn Python: Build A Virtual Assistant

#artificialintelligence

In Learn Python: Build a Virtual Assistant In Python, you will go from beginner to intermediate level the fun way; creating a real-world application! In this course, I will teach you how to create and set up a virtual assistant for your computer. We will learn how to get data from Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha, as well as create a GUI. After that, I will regularly release new videos on other optional things that you could add to our application. This course will help you add something fun to your portfolio and give you good practice for using python.

Amazon starts rolling out Alexa's Conversation Mode on Echo Show 10

Engadget

Chatting with Alexa could soon feel even more natural as Amazon starts rolling out the voice assistant's Conversation Mode. The feature, which the company revealed at its fall 2020 hardware event, allows a group of people to have back-and-forth communication with Alexa without having to say the wake word multiple times. Conversation Mode is debuting on the third-gen Echo Show 10, and Amazon is rolling it out over the next few weeks. It's an opt-in feature, and you can switch it on by saying "Alexa, join this conversation." Anyone in the room will be able to speak with the voice assistant, as long as they're looking at the screen and the smart display's camera can see them.

Hey everyone!

#artificialintelligence

I am writing about AI application, advantages and disadvantages and importance, as I mentioned in pervious Article. In the 1950s, early AI exploration concentrated on problem working and emblematic approaches. The US Department of Defense came interested in this type of work in the 1960s, and began tutoring computers to emulate abecedarian mortal logic. And, long before Siri, Alexa, or Cortana came ménage names, DARPA developed intelligent particular sidekicks in 2003. This early work paved the way for the robotization and formal logic that we see in computers moment, including decision support systems and smart hunt systems that can be designed to round and compound mortal capacities. Early work with neural networks stirs excitement for "allowing machines" Why is artificial intelligence important?

Following a buy one get one free promotion, which has since ended, the retailer has slashed the price of the smart speaker from £39.99 to £18.99.

Beyond NDCG: behavioral testing of recommender systems with RecList

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

As with most Machine Learning systems, recommender systems are typically evaluated through performance metrics computed over held-out data points. However, real-world behavior is undoubtedly nuanced: ad hoc error analysis and deployment-specific tests must be employed to ensure the desired quality in actual deployments. In this paper, we propose RecList, a behavioral-based testing methodology. RecList organizes recommender systems by use case and introduces a general plug-and-play procedure to scale up behavioral testing. We demonstrate its capabilities by analyzing known algorithms and black-box commercial systems, and we release RecList as an open source, extensible package for the community.

Apple's colorful new HomePod mini is on sale for the first time ahead of Black Friday

Engadget

Apple expanded its HomePod mini lineup with three new colors back in October, and now we're seeing the first discount on those new options, plus the classics. B&H Photo has all of the HomePod mini colors, including the new orange, blue and yellow configurations, for $95 each. That's $5 off their normal price and, while a modest discount, it's one of the best we've seen on the tiny smart speaker. The HomePod mini is Apple's main smart speaker now that it discontinued the original HomePod (although the company still supports that speaker with software updates). It's a capable device and, like other Apple accessories, arguably best for those who have many Apple products and use services like Apple Music.
