'Machine learning' is a revolution as big as the internet or personal computers

#artificialintelligence

It used to be the case that you had to program a computer so that it knew how to do things. Now computers can learn from experience. The breakthrough is called "machine learning." It's unimaginably important for understanding where technology is going, and where society is going with it. Netflix's movie recommendations, Amazon's product recommendations, Facebook's ability to spot your friends faces, dating app's matching you with potential dates - these are all early examples of machine learning. And Google's self-driving car is becoming the classic case study.

For recommending movies for Chan using the above similarity matrix, we need to first fill the N/A where he has not rated. As first step, separate the non-rated movies by Chan and a weighted matrix is created by multiplying user similarity score (user_sim[,7]) with ratings given by other users. Next step is to sum up all the columns of the weight matrix, then divide by the sum of all the similarities for critics that reviewed that movie.

The Story Behind Siri -- The Startup

#artificialintelligence

A pioneer in Artificial Intelligence, Adam Cheyer has spent most of his life living by what he calls "Verbally Stated Goals" -- that is, continuously striving to do and achieve more each year. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a magician and, in many ways, he did just that: in 2008, as inventor, computer scientist, engineer, and entrepreneur, he co-created the world's first intelligent personal assistant, Siri, with Dag Kittlaus and Tom Gruber. Siri, Inc. was a technology company borne out of SRI International, a nonprofit research unit, to create a highly clever and personable virtual assistant for smartphone consumers. By 2010, the company had been acquired by Apple Inc., and the Siri app was incorporated into Apple's iPhone 4S handsets. Cheyer became Director of Engineering for the iPhone/iOS team at Apple, where he remained for two years before leaving to spend more time with his family and to pursue personal endeavours. Cheyer is also a founding member of Change.org, a social network for positive social change, and is co-founder of Genetic Finance, which applies advanced artificial intelligence to solve problems within a wide range of industries, including financial trading, insurance, computer networking, and electronics design. Newnham: Take me back to your childhood. What first excited you about technology? Adam Cheyer: As a child, I was allowed to watch an hour of TV a week, and in that time, I got my fill of commercials selling me on the latest toys.

Microsoft Positions Cortana, Skype, AI As 'Future Of Communications' - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

In his introductory keynote for Microsoft's Build 2016 developer's conference, CEO Satya Nadella explained the company's vision for the future of communication. The concept of "conversation as a platform" will serve as the foundation of how we will interact with technology and one another. "We want to take the power of human language and apply that more pervasively to all the computing interfaces and computing interactions," he said, also noting the future "is not going to be about man vs. machines, it's going to be about man with machines." This will require humans to teach computers human language, conversational understanding, and their personal preferences so technology can be more helpful day-to-day life. Nadella noted how as humans infuse intelligence into everything, it's important for Microsoft to have a principled approach and have a way to guide their communication design.

Use Of Artificial Intelligence: How It Would Affect Digital Marketing?

#artificialintelligence

With improving technology and marketing and search engines getting more complex, use of artificial intelligence seems to be gearing up to play a major role in the search queries. Siri, Google Now and Cortana are already playing major roles in the operation of major devices. However, tech giants and marketers are seeking the advanced technology of these artificial intelligence to make better search queries. Marketers too are keen in including machine learning and the use of artificial intelligence within the marketing platform to use this technology optimally for the best form of marketing possible. With the aid of digital assistance that artificial intelligence provides, search queries and results are available at greater ease.

Conversational Computing - Success @ Creative PR Blog

One of the major announcements to come out of Microsoft's Build 2016 developer conference today was the bet the company is making on bots. Microsoft believes that bots are the new apps. Yesterday, they invited developers to build bots for Cortana, the company's virtual assistant. Cortana, for you non-gamers, is a virtual persona character from Microsoft's blockbuster first-person shooter Halo franchise. Microsoft is betting on the notion of "conversational computing," which is why the company is putting its voice recognizing virtual assistant front and center.

Amazon opens Alexa to third-party devs, aims for AI takeover - Rethink IoT

#artificialintelligence

Amazon seems to be continuing its strategy of expanding Alexa from the ashes of its aborted Fire Phone project – this week expanding its third-party support for adding Alexa to other devices. While the Echo seemed like a surprise hit for the company, it's still a little baffling that it hasn't made more of an effort to sell it outside the US. But a conversational AI-based digital assistant is a very complex feat of software engineering. Running on a central cloud computing installation, the system responds to the voice-inputs recorded on the end-device – processing them and then responding to a question or command in the way it perceives to be correct. This decision can evolve over time, and take into account the fast-moving nature of web content, so that users can just as easily ask Alexa to turn down the kitchen lights as they can query a recipe or find out the latest score update for their favorite sports team.

Microsoft bet on future of bots with improved Cortana and Bot Framework (Wired UK)

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft made clear that it is betting big on the future of bots, after making two major AI announcements at the Microsoft Build 2016 conference. CEO Satya Nadella personally introduced a cleverer Cortana (Windows' AI desktop assistant) at the developer's conference in San Francisco, and a Bot Framework that'll allow developers to build bots of their own. The framework will allow developers to build AI bots that can work within apps like Skype, Telegram or Slack to help users out when they talk about ordering a pizza or similar tasks. It was also announced that the Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality goggles are now being shipped to developers in the US and Canada.
