Microsoft's first taste of its Windows 10 Anniversary Update appears in Insider build
One of the major announcements from Microsoft's Build developer conference last week was that the company was bringing the popular Bash command line interface to Windows 10 with a new Linux subsystem. Now, developers can give it a shot with a new beta build of the operating system, which Microsoft released Wednesday morning. People on the Windows Insider Program's fast ring will get access to the new Build 14316, which includes a wide variety of other new features, too. Foremost among them are a set of new Cortana features that link their Windows or Android phones with users' PCs in a variety of ways. When Windows smartphones or Android phones with the Cortana app run low on battery life, Microsoft's virtual assistant will tell users to plug in their devices.
Beware Dating Site Scammers and Their Ungrammatical Game
An exotic stranger needs help, and you're the only one able to provide it. On any given day, a handful of those pleas still file into your email's spam folder. And if you replace "collect an inheritance" with "find true love," they're an increasing menace for dating apps and services. But they are an increasingly important front for criminals, who in turn use increasingly sophisticated methods to snare their marks, and take them for whatever they can. A recently released list, by a fraud-busting company called Scamalytics, of the top lines and photos used in profiles by online dating grifters shows that while the range of sophistication may vary, the end goal is always the same: To fleece romance-seekers out of their money.
Watch a 1950s retro calculator asked to divide 0 by 0 have a mechanical meltdown
It's not just us that can freak out when we can't solve a complex maths problem. The answer to'what is one divided by zero?' causes old-fashioned calculators to have a mechanical meltdown. A video shows a 1950s Facit ESA-01 pin-wheel calculator flicking through numbers in a vain attempt to solve the equation โ and it's not known how long it perseveres with the problem. A similar maths question - 'what is zero divided by zero' brings up error messages on modern calculators, too, and causes the iPhone's Siri to turn into a bit of a comedian. The video, by YouTube user MultiGlizda gives an insight into the internal workings of the Swedish vintage calculator that can multiply a nine-digit number by an eight-digit number to give a 13-digit answer.
What's the Sexiest Profession?
Tinder is not the only source of recent data about the sexiness of various professions. In September, the Atlantic's Liz Zhou pointed out that the list of words used disproportionately by men on OkCupid profiles includes several words related to professions, like "engineer," "software," "musician," and "construction," while the only profession on the list of words used disproportionately by women was "nurse." In June, the U.K. version of Match released its own list of hottest professions based on users' stated preferences: Women were most interested in doctors, dentists, and veterinarians; men were most interested in teachers. That same month, a survey found that Brits were most attracted to soldiers, pilots, and nurses. Two months before that, data from the "date auction" website WhatsYourPrice--in which men make cash offers to women for a first date--revealed that CEOs, financial advisers, and software developers were the most likely to have their request for a date accepted (perhaps because their offers were disproportionately high).
Apple fixes the Siri and 3D Touch bug that put your photos and contacts at risk
A security expert caused a mild panic among iPhone users this week when he discovered a way to bypass the lockscreen with a simple Siri search. In a video, the bug seemingly let him unlock his iPhone 6S by searching for a contact on Twitter and then adding that contact to his address book. After Apple was made aware of the flaw, the firm has now confirmed the problem has been fixed and handsets should no longer be affected. A security expert caused a mild panic among iPhone users this week when he discovered a way to bypass the lockscreen with a simple Siri search. Spanish tech expert Jose Rodriguez was the first person to highlight the flaw and demonstrated the exploit in a YouTube video published under the name Videosdebarraquito.
Intermediate Java / Scala Developer
If you're an intermediate Java/Scala developer interested in applying your skills at a growing start-up in the fascinating world of neural networks, artificial intelligence and machine learning, this could be a great opportunity for you. Bernie.ai is an angel-funded start-up in the dating space. This is not a dating app but rather an app that aggregates dating content in order to make the dating experience more efficient, focused and less time-intensive for the end-user. Here is a link to a recent NY Times article on the app. The app, called Bernie, uses machine vision to find great dating matches, learns user preferences based on attributes that you like and don't like and begins conversations with promising partners to see if there is interest.
6 Ways Robo-Advisors Make Investing Easy GOBankingRates
Automation has infiltrated nearly every facet of our lives -- but in the realm of managing money, the robot invasion is a welcome technological development. Where traditional money managers rely on their individual expertise to pick and manage investments for client portfolios, a robo-advisor uses computer algorithms to scour the world of investment options, calculate all the possibilities, and curate the ideal mix of investments for investors. These automated investment services are built with the kind of technology that would make the geekiest mathlete salivate. But it's the seamless, easy-to-use interface that makes robo-investing an appealing option for investors looking for low-cost, easy ways to invest. In five years, assets under management by robo-advisors will increase 68 percent annually to about 2.2 trillion, according to consulting firm A.T. Kearney.
Can Artificial Intelligence Teach Us Self-Awareness?
I've been doing a lot of research and reading on Artifical Intelligence (AI). What I find truly fascinating about the subject is it's moral and ethical implications on society as a whole. It's not too long ago that Microsoft introduced Tay to the world on Twitter, only to have Tay become a racist and sexist bot within 24 hours. She was only learning, after all, from her fellow humans. The internet can be a hostile place without any accountability whatsoever. As co-founder of an anonymous messaging app, I've witnessed the horrible things people say and do, and as a result -- I have very little hope for humanity.
Microsoft Doubles Down on Artificial Intelligence (MSFT)
Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) has strived to be a leader in the artificial intelligence arena, developing advanced AI theories and applications that permit machines to learn, evolve and make independent decisions. Microsoft's AI research team is building software that automatically learns from data, becoming more intelligent over time. For Microsoft stock, shifting focus to artificial intelligence could create a solid foundation for future stability and growth. The company's most well-known AI project is Cortana, an integrated smartphone assistant that first appeared on Windows Mobile devices back in 2013. Unfortunately for Microsoft stock holders, at the time she was more of an effort to just keep up with Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Alphabet Inc (GOOGL, GOOG), with management hoping to retain at least some of its dying mobile device division.
Apple Just Fixed a Potentially Disastrous iPhone Hack
Apple has fixed a security problem that could allow hackers to gain access to the photos and contacts stored on an iPhone even without the proper password. The trick, which was detailed in a video posted on YouTube channel Videosdebarraquito, required using a combination of Siri and 3D Touch, a newer iPhone feature that lets users more quickly access various shortcuts. Apple rolled out a fix Tuesday morning, just one day after the video was highlighted by tech blog The Daily Dot. Because the exploit took advantage of 3D Touch, it's unlikely it would have affected phones older than the iPhone 6s, the first to incorporate that feature. This isn't the only instance in which people have uncovered gateways into locked iPhones via Siri.
