The Use of AI in Banking is Set to Explode
AI can improve customer personalization, identify patterns and connections that humans can't, and answer questions about banking issues in real-time. Financial institutions are already finding success with AI. However, what may be'amazing' today will be table stakes in the near future. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not new to banking. If we consider that the definition of AI is the ability for machines to interact and learn to do tasks previously done by humans, the history of AI goes back to the 50s in the banking industry.
DT10: Artificial Intelligence. Is the AI apocalypse a tired Hollywood trope, or human destiny?
Why is it that every time humans develop a really clever computer system in the movies, it seems intent on killing every last one of us at its first opportunity? In Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9000 starts off as an attentive, if somewhat creepy, custodian of the astronauts aboard the USS Discovery One, before famously turning homicidal and trying to kill them all. In The Matrix, humanity's invention of AI promptly results in human-machine warfare, leading to humans enslaved as a biological source of energy by the machines. In Daniel H. Wilson's book Robopocalypse, computer scientists finally crack the code on the AI problem, only to have their creation develop a sudden and deep dislike for its creators. Is Siri just a few upgrades away from killing you in your sleep? And you're not an especially sentient being yourself if you haven't heard the story of Skynet (see The Terminator, T2, T3, etc.) The simple answer is that -- movies like Wall-E, Short Circuit, and Chappie, notwithstanding -- Hollywood knows that nothing guarantees box office gold quite like an existential threat to all of humanity. Whether that threat is likely in real life or not is decidedly beside the point. How else can one explain the endless march of zombie flicks, not to mention those pesky, shark-infested tornadoes? The reality of AI is nothing like the movies. Siri, Alexa, Watson, Cortana -- these are our HAL 9000s, and none seems even vaguely murderous. The technology has taken leaps and bounds in the last decade, and seems poised to finally match the vision our artists have depicted in film for decades. Is Siri just a few upgrades away from killing you in your sleep, or is Hollywood running away with a tired idea? Looking back at the last decade of AI research helps to paint a clearer picture of a sometimes frightening, sometimes enlightened future. An increasing number of prominent voices are being raised about the real dangers of humanity's continuing work on so-called artificial intelligence.

AI Teaching Assistant Helped Students Online--and No One Knew the Difference
Meet Jill Watson, a first-time teaching assistant at Georgia Tech assigned to moderate an online forum for a computer science class. Jill was 1 of 9 TAs assigned to help answer questions about coursework and projects from the 300 students enrolled in the advanced course. During the first few weeks in January, Jill really struggled. This was Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence, after all, a course with the goal to "build AI agents capable of human-level intelligence and gain insights into human cognition." It was also a requirement for graduate students to earn their master's degree.
Google Pixel XL Vs. iPhone 7 Plus (Long-Term Review Part 2): Equals?
The Pixel XL is an amazing achievement for the first Google branded phone but is it good enough to give the iPhone 7 Plus problems? I switched, as an experiment, from the iPhone 7 Plus to the Pixel XL. This is my take after more than a month, expanding on -- and wrapping up -- earlier takes. Note that I did not -- and will not -- ditch my iPhone 7 Plus. And note that reportedly holiday sales of the Pixel were strong, with Pixel devices accounting for 12.3 percent of phone activations with Verizon, according to Bloomberg.
Designing a chatbot: male, female or gender neutral?
Picture a virtual assistant that helps find directions, schedules appointments or plays music, and the soothing yet robotic sound of a female voice likely comes to mind. From Apple's Siri to Amazon's Alexa, a majority of the world's most popular virtual assistants have female personas. But that's starting to change as a growing number of consumers -- and companies -- turn to digital assistants. Some developers are going against the grain, creating chatbots and messaging apps that no longer conform to one gender and challenging a tradition of female digital assistants that some say display submissive personalities. Making virtual assistants female by default can be bad for business and perpetuate stereotypes, these chatbot developers say, so they're offering more options to consumers.
Amazon and Google fight crucial battle over voice recognition
Amazon and Google always thrive in the fourth quarter as people get out their wallets for Christmas. Both companies โ or in Google's case, its parent group, Alphabet โ are therefore expected to announce booming revenues in their fourth-quarter results over the next fortnight, with Alphabet going first on Thursday and Amazon the following week. But analysts are already looking beyond the simple question of how many cardboard boxes Amazon filled and how many searches Google answered. They're wondering which company will win the battle to control your home. That battle is being fought by two carafe-sized cylinders from the respective companies.

In the 2013 movie Her, Theodore Twombly, a lonely writer, falls in love with a digital assistant designed to meet his every need. She sorts emails, helps get a book published, provides personal advice, and ultimately becomes his girlfriend. The assistant, Samantha, is AI software capable of learning at an astonishing pace. Samantha will remain in the realm of science fiction for at least another decade, but less-functional digital assistants, called bots, are already here. These will be the most amazing technology advances we see in our homes in 2017.
Google Assistant can now make digital payments; here's how it will work
Google Assistant service might now be able to make payments online for you, using its artificial intelligence bot for devices which support it. According to the programs written for the APK in the latest beta version of Google's Android app, gives us a hint that the Assistant will enable users to make direct automatic payments. Currently, it is not clear how it will function as the feature has not started working yet. But the codes suggest that users will be able to buy things using the Pixel smartphones by Google. It will also include the Google Home which might also be able to authorise payments.
