AI Is Still in Its Formative Years

#artificialintelligence

The electronics industry over the past several years has made tremendous strides in creating artificial intelligence in a manner imagined by Allen Turing in the 1940s. The convergence of algorithmic advances in multilayer neural networks, the evolution of PC graphics processing units as massively parallel processing accelerators, and the availability of massive data sets fueled by the Internet and widely deployed sensors -- big data -- has enabled a renaissance in software neural network modeling techniques commonly referred to as "deep learning," or "DL." In addition, the evolution of 3D graphic shader pipelines into general purpose compute accelerators drastically reduced the time required to train DL models. Training time for applications as diverse as image recognition and natural language processing has been reduced from months to days -- and in some cases, hours or even minutes. These solutions have enabled new AI applications ranging from computational science to voice based digital assistants like Alexa and Siri.

The Artificial In Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Quartz recently published an article on the scope of what we mean when we say Artificial Intelligence. You may read it here, but broadly there are two schools of thought. There are the generalists who define the term broadly & these include systems such as Siri & many other such personal assistants. In this broad definition, as long as a system uses an AI component, understands commands & completes tasks, it qualifies as AI. Then there are the literalists. This group cares much more about the architecture of the system in that it should be one end-to-end computational unit.

Five Big Privacy Risks Posed by Data Analytics

Look around your home or office. To the left is a new Amazon Echo. Across the hall is a Nest thermostat. And each device is collecting data on you, your habits, and your lifestyle โ€“ every minute. Large scale data analytics are almost unavoidable.

Google turns Raspberry Pi into a dirt cheap Home competitor

Engadget

If you've ever wanted to have a conversation with your own tiny home-made computer, then your prayers have just been answered. Raspberry Pi has teamed up with Google, bringing voice integration to the Pi with a clever combination of hardware and software. Packed with the same tech that powers Google Home, the companies have released a kit that transforms a regular Raspberry Pi 3 into your very own virtual assistant. The pack contains a Voice HAT (Hardware Accessory on Top) board with a speaker and a microphone, giving Pi owners everything they need to add-in voice integration. Interestingly, this collaboration marks the first time that Google has produced something for hobbyists.

GE's futuristic Alexa lamp accepts your voice commands in style

Engadget

Amazon's Alexa, the voice-controlled platform that powers the company's own Echo line, continues to gain support from third-party manufacturers. The C by GE Sol is the latest product to embrace the technology, in the form of a table lamp that looks straight out of a sci-fi film. GE actually announced the device December of last year, but now it's finally starting to take pre-orders. As a refresher, the C by GE Sol features a circular LED light and, most importantly, doubles as a hands-free voice assistant and Bluetooth speaker. GE is letting early adopters pre-order the Sol for $160 right now, with units expected to ship in September.

Breaking Gender Bias In Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence, fondly called AI, carries stardust within. The unbound possibilities AI offers to mankind is multi-dimensional. By multi-dimensional, I mean the social, economic, and political aspects of society that AI could impact. This article will discuss our journey of creating an AI assistant, but with a special emphasis on an important factor, gender. Scheduling a meeting is as much a headache for everyone, as it was for me.

How to control your computer with your voice

Select the Notebook link (the pad icon above the cog symbol) to tweak other aspects of Cortana, such as the personal information it knows about you and the services it can access. For example, you might want to connect it up to an Outlook email address. You can personalize the information Cortana shares with you. Pick any of the content categories to choose whether or not the voice assistant will show you information in this area. So, for instance, choose Weather to turn weather updates on or off and to set your location, or choose Sports to turn sports updates on or off and tell Cortana what your favorite teams are.

Everyone Is Talking About AI, but What Does It Mean for Marketers Right Now?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence may be the most bandied about term of 2017. For consumers, AI is powering everything from virtual personal assistants and real-time translation to GPS navigation and self-driving cars. In business, AI is under the hood of everything from ride-sharing fleets to aerial analysis of shopping malls to credit scoring. Ad and marketing tech, of course, are no exception. As the CMO's role grows to include everything from ad tech to customer relations and corporate strategy, it becomes clear that unique and valuable insights--the kind analyzed by AI from mountains and mountains of data--are key.
