Machine Learning: Challenges and Opportunities in Credit Risk Modeling

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning is a method of teaching computers to parse data, learn from it, and then make a determination or prediction regarding new data. Rather than hand-coding a specific set of instructions to accomplish a particular task, the machine is "trained" using large amounts of data and algorithms to learn how to perform the task. Both attempt to find and learn from patterns and trends within large datasets to make predictions. The machine learning field has a long tradition of development, but recent improvements in data storage and computing power have made them ubiquitous across many different fields and applications, many of which are very commonplace. Apple's Siri, Facebook feeds, and Netflix movie recommendations all rely upon some form of machine learning.

Adobe Is Launching AI-Powered Voice Analytics

#artificialintelligence

To better understand how people consume media and marketing via voice-enabled devices, Adobe is adding voice analytics to the Adobe Analytics Cloud. Today, the company is launching a service that will track how users interact with the tools that media companies and brands build for Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant and Apple's Siri. The voice analytics offering will also integrate Sensei, Adobe's artificial intelligence and machine learning service, which will be able to make sense of trends within massive data sets. For example, with the software, companies developing skills (essentially the voice equivalent of apps) will be able to track performance across devices, platforms and how it all fits into the overall customer journey. The market for voice-enabled devices and voice assistance continues to grow rapidly, thanks in large part to the popularity of Amazon Echo and Google Home. Sales of voice-enabled devices grew by 39 percent year over year, according to Adobe's analytics data, and a recent report from analyst Mary Meeker found that 20 percent of mobile search queries in 2016 were made by voice.

Sony's unorthodox take on AI is now open source

#artificialintelligence

On one hand, it will help developers build smarts into products, and on the other, Sony is hoping that developers will "further build on the core libraries' programs," it writes. We gladly give props to Sony as an AI pioneer, but its current products like the aforementioned Xperia Ear, which uses the Siri-like Xperia Agent, are pretty rough compared to the Echo or Google Assistant. Specifically, we noted in our review that Sony's assistant doesn't have a very natural speaking voice compared to rivals, and isn't, well, very smart. However, Sony's AI offerings are certainly unique.

Smart Home Speaker Market Seeing Growth, But Consumers Want Better Assistants

International Business Times

Voice speakers have been a growing market for companies like Amazon and Google. And thanks to a survey from Adobe Analytics Cloud, it's possible to see where the market should be going. Among the survey's key takeaways, the Amazon Echo series and the Google Home speaker saw its biggest jump in U.S. sales during the past holiday season. Adobe Analytics Cloud said three out of four speakers in the market's current install base were sold during this time. Smart home support has also played a role in the growth of the virtual speaker market.

Grindr asks judge to toss suit condemning gay dating app

Boston Herald

A judge will decide if a lawsuit can proceed against a gay dating app after over 1,000 sex-hungry men accosted a New York man at home and work after an ex-boyfriend posted fake profiles. Grindr asked a Manhattan federal court judge Wednesday to toss out Matthew Herrick's claims. The company says the Communications Decency Act protects it from liability and Herrick should sue his ex-lover instead. Grindr says it can't be blamed because Herrick got "mixed up with a tech savvy, judgment-proof individual." Herrick sued Grindr, saying he couldn't stop a steady stream of unwelcome visitors despite roughly 100 complaints reporting the damage from dozens of fake profiles made in his name.

Microsoft squeezed AI onto a Raspberry Pi

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning usually work best with a lot of horsepower behind them to crunch the data, compute possibilities and instantly come up with better solutions. That's why most AI systems rely on local sensors to gather input, while more powerful hardware in the cloud manages all the heavy lifting of output. It's how Apple's Siri and Amazon Alexa work, and how IBM Watson can tackle virtually any major task. It is, though, a limiting approach when it comes to making smarter Internet of Things and applying intelligence when there isn't Internet connectivity. "The dominant paradigm is that these [sensor] devices are dumb," said senior researcher with Microsoft Research India, Manik Varma.
