Now that Google has unveiled the new additions to its Home speaker lineup and Sonos has launched its own Alexa-enabled device, Microsoft seriously has to hurry up if it wants its assistant to have a shot at finding a place in our homes. Even though we may finally be close to seeing the Cortana-enabled Harman Kardon Invoke speaker arrive in stores, Microsoft is still lagging behind its rivals in the smart home race. The company may be trying to catch up, and has added a new "Connected Home" section to the Cortana Notebook menu in some Windows 10 PCs. You should see a new item called Connected Home. After you enable this, Cortana can connect to smart home services like Hue, SmartThings, Nest, Insteon and Wink.

Bigger than electricity, bigger than the internet, experts say. AI is already omnipresent in our everyday lives: When Netflix recommends you should watch Jane the Virgin and Silicon Valley (Any resemblances to what I really watch on Netflix is a coincidence), that's a form of AI i.e. an algorithm that learns from your tastes and predicts what you are most likely to enjoy watching next. Your vacuum cleaner is powered by AI. And if you live in China, even your toilet paper dispenser runs on AI! In the workplace, artificial intelligence is evolving into intelligent assistants to help us work smarter, but also into drones that deliver the things we order on Amazon and of course into self driving vehicles (today, planes are mostly flown by AI already).

Many companies are now embracing conversational interfaces and for good reason. For one thing, conversational interfaces are truly cross-platform and work across smart-phones, desktops, smartwatches and integrate well with services like Twitter, Facebook, and Google. Another factor is the significant strides in natural language technology in recent years. For example, earlier in May 2017, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the word error rate of Google Assistant is currently at an all-time low of 4.9%, down from 8.5% in July 2016.
