Facebook removes the middleman with its own dating feature

Engadget

During his F8 developer conference keynote today, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be launching a dating feature. The CEO said that people often tell him that they met on Facebook and since so many relationships now being online, a dating feature seemed like a logical next step. Of course, a dark cloud of data privacy concerns are hanging over the conference and in light of that, Zuckerberg made sure to note that the upcoming tool was designed from the beginning with privacy and safety in mind. The dating feature won't suggest any of your Facebook friends as a match and your friends also won't be able to see your dating profile. Other dating services have been strongly tied to Facebook in the past and it helped them gain the strong user rates that they currently host.

'OK Google, find me a job': New job search feature launches in Canada

#artificialintelligence

Google is wading into Canada's employment market with a new search feature and a $1 million investment into a forthcoming jobs platform. The technology giant announced Thursday that it had rolled out new search capabilities for Canadian users, allowing job seekers to browse postings that can be filtered by commute distance, job title and time commitment within the Google search engine. Google also revealed its philanthropic arm will be financially backing Toronto's MaRS innovation hub as it develops an employment platform that will launch next year and aims to help workers navigate the changing job market. The moves signal Google's growing interest in the employment sector and the expansion of its search functions, which come amid a shift toward the automation of workplaces and increasing pressure on workers to update skills as offices become more technologically-savvy. Sabrina Geremia, Google Canada's country director, considers the announcement a natural step for the company because "a lot of people turn to Google when they are looking for jobs."

Facebook F8 2018: What we don't see will matter more than what we do

The Independent - Tech

Facebook is set to hold its annual F8 developer conference, expected to reveal software updates and its latest advances in virtual reality. But more significant than what will be unveiled is what isn't - highlighting how this event couldn't come at a worse time. Around 5,000 attendees will watch CEO Mark Zuckerberg take to the stage at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in California at 6am PDT (6pm BST), in what will be an extraordinary exercise in damage limitation. The company continues to reel from revelations that the UK data firm Cambridge Analytica harvested Facebook user data for the purpose of political propaganda during the 2016 US Presidential elections and Brexit campaign. Less than a month ago, Mr Zuckerberg was sat before Congress answering questions about how this was able to happen, while just this week one of the company's board members left Facebook over an apparent clash over privacy policy.

Liberate your Amazon Echo 2 from the constraints of a power cord

PCWorld

Ninety7 specializes in battery docks that render smart speakers portable, so it's appropriate that the company's new product for the Amazon Echo 2 features a large, easy-to-grab handle. The Sky is a replacement sleeve for the Echo 2 that docks the speaker to an 8800mAh Li-ion battery, so you can take Alexa out in the yard or on even on the road. The company says the battery should power an Echo 2 for about 8 hours, and a column of four LEDs near the bottom of the sleeve report the battery life remaining. I'm sure that will vary depending on how many times you summon Alexa and how much you use the Echo 2 to stream music. The battery gets recharged from the Echo 2's factory AC adapter and cable.
